Rund um den Finanzplatz Eschborn-Frankfurt Preview

Oh, you thought it was all Ardennes and Cobbles and Maglia Rosa and Mellow Johnnies around here did you? Well, I drew the short straw and get to tell you all about the Rund um den Finanzplatz Eschborn-Frankfurt being run on May 1st. Here, in a nutshell is all you need to know about historic Frankfurt:

  1. Frankfurt is the ugliest city in Germany
  2. The Turkish coke dealers wear Raybans
  3. You'll get kicked out of the hostel by breaking into the kitchen through the window at 3AM.
  4. Suitcases make lousy pillows, but the grass on the banks of the Main River is surprisingly comfortable if you have nowhere else to sleep.

Join me on the umgekerteandereseiteflip...

Star-divide

The startlist, located here, shows the following teams towing the line...

  1. Milram (surprise!)
  2. Rabobank
  3. HTC-Columbia
  4. Katusha
  5. CCC Polsat Polkowice (obviously the Irish well represented on this team)
  6. ISD-Neri
  7. Landbouwkrediet
  8. Saur - Sojasun
  9. Eyjafjallajokull
  10. Skil-Shimano
  11. Topsport Vlaanderen - Mercato
  12. Vacansoleil
  13. Vorarlberg - Corratec

Ok, I made one of those teams up, I admit.  The others are actually racing there.  As you can imagine, some of the more elite German members of the peloton are well represented at the race, with Linus Gerdemann, Bert Grabsch, Tony Martin and Andre Greipel all showing for this baby.  Other names of note: Pippo, McEwen, and four dudes on the Polish team named "Tomasz".

Until 2008, this race was called by the far more interesting "Rund um den Henninger-Turm" with the Henninger-Turm being a giant silo used to hold grain for the Henninger Brewery, but the economy being the way it is, and Frankfurt being the banking heart of Germany, the finance industry wanted to slap you in the face even when you're watching cycling, so they changed it to "Rund um den Finanzplatz", which translates to "Tour of the place your 401k goes to die".

Near as I can tell (map here), the race starts in Eschborn, runs into Frankfurt and then does a big loop all the way out to Kittelhütte in the north, then south to Glasshütte, does a pair of southerly loops and then heads back through Eschborn into Frankfurt, ending with four laps around the old Opera House.

Past winners of this race include Eddie Merckx, Johan Bruyneel, some guy named "Erik Zabel" and Karsten Kroooon.

I do believe Merckx won...

… the gunny sack race at the last team building event my company threw as well as the beer chugging competition after that. In the back of my mind, whenever I joke and say “Did Lance win yet?”, I tend to think “No, but Merckx did… several times”.

i'm sure he did - he must have -

his name seems to be on the list of former winners of every bike race in existence. And all gunny sack races as well.

Good trivia question:

Which race did Merckx contend at least once but never win?

by tedvdw on Apr 30, 2010 12:50 PM EDT up reply actions

That made for a fun google

A lesser Belgian rider, Noël van Tyghem, won X in 1972 and said:
“Between us, I and Eddy Merckx have won every classic that can be won. I won X , Merckx won all the rest.”

Okay, time to bring out the encyclopedia...

I have more races than just one, well the obvious one that you were probably referring too…

Like… GP Jef Scherens (2nd in ‘65 and 3rd in ’75)
GP du Parisien (3 man TT that was contested in the early to mid 60’s…was 2nd in ‘65)
Manx International (big back in the day and even Anquetil won it)
GP d’Isbergues
Gp de Wallonie

Bold races are still active

Yes.

As we went over the top, Frank Schleck said to me, 'Don't worry, follow my wheel, it'll be OK.' But the first corner, he crashed, he went into a ditch....For two years now I've had to explain why I'm bad at going downhill because of that day.--Robert Gesink

Too bad Kroon won't be there

He used to end his spring campaign with a bang here.
Winning it 2 times if I recall correctly. Last year he was in a two-man breakaway with Wegmann and came in second.

The course is quite tough with lots of hills. Milram and Greipel really want this win I suspect so this should be fun!

Ouch

Quite a bang it was this year indeed. He is doing ok now. Surgery through his mouth to set his facial bones right. To prevent scars on his face. My stomach feels strange now, no more details…

German TV are planning to broadcast the whole thing from start to finish

see here for more details, including the intriguing “hr-online berichtet ausführlich von dem Radsportgeschehen und überträgt das Rennen via Livestream im Internet” Is that a live ticker or live video? Could you cope with cuts away to “die große hr3-Disco- Party”

by Monty. on Apr 30, 2010 6:09 PM EDT up reply actions

I can't figure it out

The last time I visited Frankfurt and Stuttgart

I thought that the former was much prettier. Could have been because I was there during Euro 2008 and everyone, Germans and Turks, were celebrating, though.

Stuttgart is much prettier than Frankfurt imho...

… the phrase “prettier” not being exactly the phrasing I would use. Munich is pretty. Salzburg is pretty. The Schwarzwald is pretty. Stuttgart is… tidy. Frankfurt… is not.

Kai Reus will be racing again

After a first comeback from a horrible accident he didn’t ride since February 20 because they found remnants of mono in his blood. Now he is back and has set his eyes on the Vuelta.

Well now

Look who just landed himself a gig writing race previews. Dan, have you ever gotten arrested in the Netherlands?

by Chris... on Apr 30, 2010 2:16 PM EDT reply actions

Perhaps if we try that question from another angle:

Dan, have the Dutch authorities let you out of the hoosegow yet?
