Past Experience – Selected Case Studies |
2005 Typhoon Season – Gas Tanker Without Control |
In September 2005 UNEP-WCMC supported a major energy company when one of their floating storage units was directly in the path of a typhoon without power. UNEP-WCMC was advising on the ecosystem conditions in the vicinity of the vessel. Control was regained of the vessel and the potential disaster was avoided. UNEP-WCMC continued to supply information and advice until all danger had passed. |

South Asia Disaster - Tsunami following Earthquake |
Following the earthquake on December 26th 2004 UNEP-WCMC provided immediate information on ecosystems and protected areas throughout the affected region. In the months following the disaster, UNEP-WCMC provided briefing documents, maps and analyses to many of the agencies on the ground. As a follow up UNEP-WCMC produced a booklet which examined the shoreline protection provided by coral reefs and mangroves.

Conflict and the Environment – Iraq |
In March 2003 the Centre collated information on the biodiversity and environment in Iraq prior to the US-led invasion. This information was provided as both briefing documents and as GIS layers to many organisations including governments, international bodies and the worlds press. |

Volcanic Eruption at Nyiragongo, Congo |
The Nyiragongo volcano in the Democratic Republic of Congo, situated near the border with Rwanda, is known as one of Africa's most active volcanoes. When the volcanoe erupted on 17 January, 2002 UNEP-WCMC quickly provided information on the extent of both local protected areas and the known range of the endangered gorillas that lived in the area surrounding the volcano, so that decision makers understood the biodiversity pressures in the region. |

Training material |
Working with industry partners UNEP-WCMC has developed a set of training materials to be used in preparing to respond to a crisis. These materials have been widely adopted within the oil industry and by the IMO as a mechanism to engage participants in a response. The materials include maps, assets pieces, injects as well as the trainer and participant manuals. |
