Portland's Arlington Club still a bit of a mystery

Portlanders can live here for decades and still hear almost nothing about the Arlington Club, a private social club that dates to the 1860s. And there wasn't a whole lot to learn when the club's headquarters at 811 S.W. Salmon St. was nominated last month for the National Register of Historic Places.

"What do they do today?" asked Carrie Richter, vice chair of the Portland Historic Landmarks Commission, who happens to be a lawyer with a major Portland firm. Alas, no one from the club was present to answer questions.

"By their nature, they are somewhat of an inward-looking organization," said Nicholas Starin, a city planner. Historically, the club's membership has included many of Portland's most successful business leaders. "Although it was formed as a social club, a lot of business has gone on there over the years," said Harris Matarazzo, a landmarks commission member.

The four-story brick club building erected in 1910 was designed by Whidden & Lewis, a leading early-day architectural firm whose work also included Portland City Hall and the Multnomah County Courthouse. The exterior of the sedate classical-revival Arlington Club is largely unchanged.

The Arlington Club shares an affiliation with about 60 other private clubs in the United States and Europe, whose members are eligible to rent sleeping accommodations at the Arlington Club during visits to Portland.

What's the name of the "affiliation" of the 60 clubs?
