What.cd Breaks The 200,000 Torrent Milestone

July 10, 08 by sharky   11,797  views

Today, What.cd took another stride towards God-like status by becoming the first music tracker since OiNK to reach the 200,000 torrent mark. Not to be outshined, Waffles.fm is not far behind with 165,555. Combine the two together, and they’re serving up more torrents than OiNK.cd ever did. It goes to show that good things can come out of bad, after all. RIP OiNK.

300,000 Torrents By 2009

If What.cd users can add an additional 100,000 torrents to their ever-growing site, they’ll catch up with OiNK.cd for most torrents ever offered by a private music tracker. Some even suggest that OiNK.cd only carried a grand total of 220K torrents, although we can’t verify this. Either way, we think they’ll make it. Back on June 4th, 2008, What was offering 182,000 torrents - just one month later and they’ve increased this by 18K. If projections are correct, they should hit the 300K torrent mark before the end of the year. They’ll need a little help, though, from site promotions such as the smash-hit "FLAC Freeleech" and the following "MP3 Freeleech" that came after.

Not bad for a tracker that’s only been around a mere 8 and a half months. What makes this so remarkable is that all of this has been accomplished with just a fraction of the users that OiNK had. Look for What.cd to pass the 5 million "snatch" mark soon, as well.

In other What News, You can now use ssl.what.cd for secure browsing:

Look for this option to be added to your user profile soon.

Tips for Joining What.cd - Ask in IRC

To join What.cd you have to keep a good upload/download ratio or you will get banned pretty quickly. So only try to join What.cd if you are serious about keeping a good upload/download ratio and just not going to join just to download as much as possible and not upload anything.

To join follow these steps:

First you need to download an IRC client if you haven’t already got one, such as mIRC found here: www.mirc.com.

When installed and ready to go, you need to join the What.cd IRC server, which is irc.what.cd Port 6667. Once you have connected to the what.cd server, you have to join the channel #what.cd-invites (or just click here for the IRC hotlink). DO NOT GO TO ANOTHER CHANNEL AND ASK FOR AN INVITE, YOU WILL BE BANNED FROM THE CHANNEL OR IGNORED.

When in the channel please read the instructions that are given there. You’ll need to do a speed test of your Internet’s connection speed from Speedtest.net, and include the URL or your speedtest in this next part. Type !queue <speedtest_dot_net_result_url_here> into the channel and you will be added to the waiting list to be interviewed for an invite. Please be patient waiting in the queue can take up to 4 hours or even longer. This is where you got to be one of them people that really want an invite as you could get an invited to the interview at anytime so you really need to stay at your computer watching to screen.

When you get invited to an interview room you will be asked a few question about yourself, how much you know about music (e.g. do you know what a FLAC file is?) And you might need to provide and image of your upload/download ratio of other private Bittorrent sites. So before you go to an interview room be sure to have uploaded your upload/download ratio to an image hoster (Imageshack.us, Tinypic.com) for quick access.

Don’t be nervous when answering the questions. If they accept you and are willing to give you an invite they will ask for your email address and then they will send you an invite. So just go to you inbox and you will see an invite. From there on it is easy street as you just got to sign up and you’re in. Please be aware that they might not give you an invite for many reasons. So don’t be too disappointed if you don’t get an invite. You can always do the application process above over and over again until they give you on. But they will give you a second chance which is helpful.

TIP: please go and read these articles before joining, you MUST know this stuff before you get an account, so many people fail for not knowing these basics:

Brilliant milestone. But again are these milestones something to fear as well? Its when you reach such milestones that the RIAA will take notice and try everything in its power to bring down these brilliant trackers(Demonoid and Oink as examples).

So on one hand we rejoice but on the other we have to be careful to tread into this territory.Just my opinion.

Congrats What and Waffles for being brilliant trackers with wonderful staff who have certainly fulfilled their ambition of being ultimate sources for music content!!

Well actually demonoid wasn’t taken down the site admin had to quit (according to the official statement on the site). also OiNK was taken down on pretty stringent and weak charges, I think the RIAA will have to scramble a little to find a substantial charge against What.CD. But you do have a point: the more attention ANY site garners the more negative attention it gains as well. overall I think we’re pretty safe.

is there anyway to get a what.cd invite?

If so, let me know at me email: michael.mechanical@gmail.com

This is probably the wrong thread to offer this, but I’ll trade a waffles invite once they open again.

I retract my last statement. Trading is against the rules, apparently. Thanks, though.

what a fricken joke, wait in the irc chat for over 6 hours then get an invite and i find the site shite…

who do they think they are maiking us wait that long for an invite, what a crappy tracker and staff…

  10. 010   •   James Says:

Don’t use !status or you’ll be kicked from the channel.

Murda: we now have more people handling the influx of interviewees. Sorry you had to wait so long. If you really don’t like the site, please contact a staff member to get your account disable so we can make room for grateful users.
