Families: Inheritance tax freeze puts squeeze on the family purse
The Chancellor highlighted his help for families in yesterday's Budget, but few will end up better off as a result of the changes. More pain for the wealthy was the order of Budget day. A two-year stamp duty holiday for first-time buyers on property under £250,000 will be funded by a rise in duty on sales above £1m from 4 to 5 per cent from 2011 in a tax move that the Conservatives have pledged not to oppose if they win the next election.

Those on low incomes will be thinking they got a little more carrot than stick in the Budget. Low-paid parents with young children under two will have their tax credit entitlement rise by £4 from 2012.

Conservative plans to slash inheritance tax would effectively abolish the tax "for practical purposes", shows research by the leading accountants, Grant Thornton, for The Independent. In the proposals by the shadow chancellor George Osborne, unveiled in 2007, the threshold would be raised from the present £325,000 to £1m.

Savers have handed the taxman an estimated £13bn by not making the most of their tax-free savings allowance, according to Clydesdale and Yorkshire Banks. Since the launch of Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs) in 1999, savers have invested only one-sixth of what they could have, meaning millions have been paying unneccessary tax.

Just over a fortnight is left before the self-assessment deadline when all online tax returns must be filed along with any money owed. Taxpayers must return their forms by 31 January to avoid contributing to the estimated £503m in fines for late returns and errors set to be handed to the taxman this year, according to professional advice website Unbiased.co.uk.
