Leaked Screeners On The Decline For 2010 Oscars

December 15, 09 by sharky   16,286  views

Has anyone else noticed that there are far fewer leaked screeners this year? Compared to last year’s rampant leakage of screeners that made it to P2P, many of which were found well in advance of scheduled wide theatrical release dates, it would certainly appear that The Academy has closed some gaps in their security. While still early, trends clearly suggest that late-season predicted Oscar-nominee screeners aren’t ending up on P2P as quickly as anticipated, if at all.

Oscar Screeners Sent Out

Screeners sent out between Oct. 8th through Dec. 8th to the full academy include (alphabetically):

(500) Days of Summer, An Education, Anvil, A Serious Man, Away We Go, Bright Star, Coco Before Chanel, Coraline, District 9, Funny People, Julie & Julia, Nine, Pirate Radio, Star Trek, Taking Woodstock, The Damned United, The Informant!, The Lovely Bones, The Messenger, The Young Victoria, Two Lovers, Up, Up In The Air, Whatever Works, Where The Wild Things Are.

From these 25 films, only two have been released as screeners on P2P (Up & Star Trek), and both were leaked far in advance (Sept 2nd and 4th, respectively) of this round of screeners shipped to the academy.

This Year’s List of 2010 Oscar Nominees

Though unofficial, below is a list of just some of the film candidates that could be nominated for an Oscar (source partially from here). An official list of nominees will be announced on February 2nd, 2010.

(500) Days of Summer, An Education, Amelia, A Serious Man, A Single Man, Avatar, Away We Go, Bright Star, Coraline, District 9, Everybody’s Fine, Inglourious Basterds, In The Loop, Invictus, Julie & Julia, Nine, Pirate Radio, Precious, Public Enemies, Sherlock Holmes, Star Trek, The Blind Side, The Boys Are Back, The Brothers Bloom, The Hurt Locker, The Informant!, The Lovely Bones, The Road, The Young Victoria, Up, Up In The Air, Where The Wild Things Are.

Many of the films below have already been released as retail DVDs/Blu-Rays, while a few others are not yet out in wide theatrical release. Of the 40 films listed, only 7 have appeared on P2P available in the form of screeners.

Stats Compared to Last Year

Not only has the academy (so far) been extremely successful in limiting the number of leaked screeners. Unlike 2009’s Oscar nominees, not a single screener has yet to turn up on P2P that precedes the wide theatrical release date. Most SCR leaks have come months after the movie hit the theatres, with the exception of Precious and The Blind Side which were relatively quick in comparison.

Last year was quite an embarrasment; here’s a sample of 12 Oscar winners from 2009 (9 of which were available on P2P before being released as a "wide" theatrical showing).

While it’s likely that at least some of this year’s collection will eventually leak out, it may take a little longer due to the Oscars being hosted two weeks later than usual. Then again, it’s entirely possible that the academy has finally figured out an airtight solution for preventing the majority of leaks. Surely time will tell; we may require to do a major update on this post in a few weeks.

Thanks to their good connections and pre-retail access p2p groups like ELEKTRI4KA and few other releasers at tRu get the R5 DVDs before official release dates.

this is completely misleading and inaccurate. many of these movies are out as retail-sourced rips. the only movies from this list that are not released as such are: An Education, A Serious Man, Bright Star, Nine, The Informant!, The Lovely Bones, The Messenger, Up In The Air, and Whatever Works. @ FML — It may seem misleading (to you), and it is not inaccurate. Read over the quoted sentence again :) . What you’ve posted are a bunch of scene rls (most of which aren’t even SCRs, and the ones that ARE screeners weren’t ones sent out to academy members during the given date, and/or won’t make it to become Oscar nominees.

I’m quite sure that most readers already know that many of these are already “out” as retail rips; there was no point in dawdling on that (ahem, readers have their own tracker accounts, so they know what’s available).

This was an article on potential Oscar-nominees being leaked as screeners, not as a “total recap of 2009 rls”. I’m fairly sure that Drag Me To Hell, Black Dynamite, Antichrist, Good Hair, etc aren’t going to be winning any awards at the Oscars.

  15. 015   •   FML Says:

screeners likely won’t leak when there is already a retail rip, that was the point. so including 500 days of summer, away we go, coco before chanel, coraline, district 9, funny people, julie & julia, pirate radio [aka the boat that rocked], star trek, taking woodstock, the damned united, young victoria, two lovers, and up is misleading as retail rips have already been released. the entire premise for this article, that screeners have declined for this year, is based on misinformation.

  16. 016   •   GodIsAn'Merican Says:

Just an FYI in means of reasons why:
1)The major protection scheme for Oscar screeners (Cinea) was dumped last year during/after the Oscar season. This would lead us to believe that there is a new protection scheme out this year, probably more of a physical protection system instead of a technological one.
2)The major group that pre’d the Oscar screeners and consistently had the Oscar screener source, PUKKA/DREAMLIGHT, got busted up earlier this year, and either the supplier(s) went into hiding, or got caught up in the bus.
    Just one person’s opinion.

  17. 017   •   Sharky Says:

@ FML You said, “screeners likely won’t leak when there is already a retail rip -that is the point” - Really, you’re entire point is dismissible. This is not “likely” as you say, but more like “never” - they just won’t come out at all when there’s already a DVDRip or R5. Anyone that possesses a valuable unreleased screener whereby the DVDRip/R5 is already available has nothing to gain. It’s all about having it “first” - think about CAMs, TS’s - and that whole line. Scene groups won’t touch a screener if a decent R5 or a DVD is already out - the SCR is dead (both these will ‘trump’ a screener). At this time of year, it’s tough to find good suppliers of screeners for these films; and R5s, dvdrips are nil. I’m talking about the Oscar candidates that are vying for the late running to make the cut (not the older 2009 films which are already out there on P2P or at video stores for rental); this is not the comparison I’m trying to make. It’s all about the DVDSCRs that should/could be coming out.

  18. 018   •   HAIGUIS Says:

What are you on about FML…
This article is purely about leaked screeners that came out before the release date, not whatever the fuck your talking about…

  19. 019   •   Mack Says:

Sharky, this may be inaccurate for some films. As they are already released as DVDRips, pirates may have the DVDSCR but still won’t release it cos its not better than a DVDRip. Or reviewers may not release that so and so film cos its already out on dvdrip and no one’s buying it.
