‘Magnet Catcher’ Turns Torrents Into Magnet Links

For public torrent indexers, actual .torrent files (and even trackers themselves) may seem a little passé with the increasing popularity of magnet links. While magnet links are hardly a new concept; sites such as TPB and KickAssTorrents have recently added support for them, although most public indexers still do not. That is, until now. Magnet Catcher is a brand-new script that turns info hashes from torrent files into magnet URIs, and works on virtually any website. It’s especially handy for those who are unable to download .torrent files.

Magnet Catcher is a userscript - not an external app - so you’ll require Greasemonkey and Firefox (although other browsers may also support it). After it’s been installed and enabled, Magnet Catcher will add a magnet icon next to torrents.

As seen on Torrentz.com:

As seen on Isohunt.com:

Simply click the magnet link, and choose your BitTorrent client. You may need to associate magnet links to an application - if so, click "Choose…" and browse to your client (i.e. utorrent.exe).

TIP: uTorrent users, be sure to associate magnet URIs through Options > Preferences > General.

Back in uTorrent, you’ll notice that the magnet links are completely trackerless, connecting through DHT and PEX.

Better still, Magnet Catcher does away with the need to "click in" on a torrent description in order to download the torrent. In most cases, magnet URI links are displayed directly on the browse pages next to the torrent titles. Supported sites include:

    Questions:

How will this affect the private community?

If used with DHT, will this be a next step to decentralized tracking?
(Sorry if THIS question was answered, but I can’t recall anything. Will search and update).

for now this will have no affect on private trackers but maybe when this is fully tested someone will find a way to implement this into a private society or something where there is someway to measure your sharing.. but atleast we are moving to greener pastures…

hopefully this will make torrenting even more indistructable… only time will tell

but with Magnet tracking, i cant chhose the location in my HDD to download, only default location to dowbnload, also i cant choose which file to download & prioritise as such!!!
if magnet links takes care of these pending issues, i am sure magnet links is the way to the future!!!

I noticed with magnet links…..if you use a site such as btreannounce, the torrent added by the magnet link….shows as an invalid torrent file. I have tried this with several torrents added to utorrent and they all give the same result. Any ideas as to why this is?

how it affects the pirating community is adding safety to the top 1 list so no downlaods = no look ups when fbi comes unless they find the server of the torrent site youve been using magnet links from LOL than your screwed so yet your still protected :D

I have been using magnet links for a bit on TPB when I occasionally use them, and what more can I say? I’m looking forward to when more private trackers jump on board with it.
