Your Guide to Virginia Tech's Off-Season

Hey, look! I found an excuse to post this picture again.

Hey, look! I found an excuse to post this picture again.

Virginia Tech's basketball team saw its season end last night in the NIT. And while I support all of the Hokies' fine athletic teams, it also meant the end to regular game coverage for the 2009-10 sports season on this here blog. Sure there might be the occasional post on softball or baseball here and there, but let's be serious. The end of basketball season means it's officially football season for Virginia Tech.

But have no fear. While this blog may be in offseason mode, that doesn't mean the posts are going to stop. No, far from it. There's still plenty to see and do around here from now until Sept. 6.

"Players of the scrimmage - First-team defense. The display from the first-teamers was breathtaking. They looked to be in midseason form in holding Kellen Moore's first-team offense to three consecutive three-and-outs. And the offense wasn't even close to getting a first down. If I could put those three series in a bottle and save them until Virginia Tech, I totally would."

OBNUG was at Boise State's spring scrimmage Wednesday and liked what he saw from the Bronco defense.

Rhode Island 79, Virginia Tech 72: Hokies Go Cold Down the Stretch Again

This game reminded me a lot of the Miami game in the ACC Tournament. Tech looks strong for a while, but couldn't buy a shot down the stretch and wound up losing a game they should have won. It's almost become a trademark of Hokie basketball the last three years. When there's an important game with a lot on the line, the Hokies can't close it out.

The UConn game was a nice win for the Hokies, but it the Huskies weren't the toughest team in this region. That was Rhode Island and the Rams proved that Wednesday night. They trapped and pressed their way to 79-72 win and a trip to New York.

2009-10 Virginia Tech Basketball: NIT vs. Rhode Island Game Thread

Virginia Tech Hokies (25-8, 10-6) vs. Rhode Island Rams (25-9, 9-7)

Time: 7 p.m. EDT
Date: Wednesday, March 24, 2010
Place: Cassell Coliseum (9,847), Blacksburg, Va.
TV: ESPN2
Spread: Virginia Tech -6

Resources: SBN Coverage | VT Notes | URI Notes | NIT Primer

With a win the Hokies advance to Madison Square Garden and set a school record for wins in a season. Rumor is they're letting students in free tonight, so Cassell should be rockin'. It may only be the NIT, but there's a lot on the line and it should be a fun game to watch. Winner faces North Carolina in MSG.

Game Thread: Use the Internet's best live commenting system to discuss tonight's game. I'll be around.

Game Guide: Hokies Hope to Press On Past Rhode Island to NIT Semifinals

For the second time in two years, the Hokies find themselves one win away from a trip to New York for the NIT semifinals in Madison Square Garden. By all accounts, this team is taking this tournament very seriously and wants to get by Rhode Island Wednesday night and make their way to MSG.

Standing between Tech and the city that never sleeps is a Rams team that is tough to figure. Like the Hokies, they looked like a lock for the NCAA Tournament before a series of questionable losses sent them to America's favorite consolation bracket.

Virginia Tech 65, UConn 63: Hudson to the Rescue, Hokies to the NIT Quarterfinals

Video from the guys at Tech Hoops.

The jumper by Dorenzo Hudson in the video above was had the most direct impact on Virginia Tech's win over UConn in the second round of the NIT. But 20 minutes before Hudson's shot, J.T. Thompson made a 3-pointer as the first half ended that changed the momentum of the game.

Haters gonna hate...

Delaney_tweet_01_medium

...ballers gonna ball.

I'd be lying if I said I didn't doubt Virginia Tech's ability to beat UConn last night. Shame on me. And while Malcolm Delaney had an off-night from the field, he still contributed a helluva lot to the Hokies' win in last night's second-round NIT game. Delaney finished with nine assists against three turnovers, including the assist on Dorenzo Hudson's dagger with 14 seconds left.
