I coulda been a contenda! (courtesy portigal.com)Despite the economic downturn in North America, the future looks bright in BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China). So bright, in fact, that there's been an almighty shift. According to Reuters, Toyota has upped global sales stats by 2.2 percent. The increase further cements their number one slot worldwide. That's because GM's global sales have contracted by three percent, trailing Toyota by 278k units. [Note: GM "gooses" its figures by including minority-held joint ventures.] Volkswagen has grown by an astonishing 5.8 percent. As Ford's sales have shrunk by six percent, they've surrendered third largest automaker props to VeeDub. Further commendation goes to Hyundai for increasing sales worldwide by a whopping 10.8 percent, scooping fifth place in the global ranking.

    I read the VW/Ford news on local media… which kinda surprised me.

    GM on the other side… it’s kinda old news. It’s not important, because, sadly, Toyota is kicking GM’s ass bigtime.

    And this is an advice, I know you have to surf the hell out of internet (among other things) everyday to keep this machine running cool and updated, but you guys gotta get faster, the V6 Camaro test appeared in both Automobile and MT last Thursday, and it’s commented here today.

    You showed the pic with the 3 muscle cars… that test must have appeared at the same time.

    I don’t check Jalopnik or Autoblog.

    I’m kinda surprised that Honda isn’t a little higher in the rankings; however, they probably do not have much to worry about. Does Hyundai include Kia sales figures?

    Nice to see you on a by-line, Cammy.

    The other slightly interesting news here is that Hyundai is #5 AHEAD of both Honda and Nissan, which rank #6 and #7.

    Another slightly surprising thing for Americans to ponder is that Suzuki is #10! Most Americans have no idea that Suzuki are the biggest selling make in Japan AND in India, the most important one of those two being India – due to the massive and continuing growth of that market, while the Japanese market is mature (much like the US auto market). The other reason that Suzuki is the #1 selling make in Japan, is that the majority of the cars sold in that country are Kei cars (660cc maximum) and Suzuki are the biggest seller. They even manufacture Kei cars for Mazda and Nissan on contract.

    North America is the big hole in VWs global market share but that was a plus this year when the US market was taking such a big knockback.
    We’ll see what happens when the market recovers and that VW plant in TN opens.

    Combining Renault and Nissan numbers would put them in 3rd place btw…

    Thanks for all your kinds words (all 2 of you! ahem!).

    Combining Renault and Nissan’s number would put them in 3rd place, BUT it won’t happen.

    As I have said time and time again, they never merged! It is an alliance. They retain their own brands and their own strategies. They only collaborate when it is in both their interests or if one can help the other.

    Other revelations in the rankings which I didn’t write about were:

    Renault coming within a whisker of supplanting Peugeot-Citroen as Europe’s second largest car manufacturer.

    Suzuki rising up the ranks. As Menno rightly points out, India has been a boon for them. Suzuki is a brand which is cheap enough for Indians to buy (cost has been an area for Toyota which has caused them to stumble in the indian market), reliable and (most importantly) small enough to navigate around those choppy roads of India.

    As for waiting for the market to recover to see what will happen to VW, I remain sceptical. VW didn’t make a splash in the NA market when it was robust, what’s going to change….?

    I am aware Renault Nissan haven’t merged but they do have cross shareholdings and share executives, platforms etc. A lot more than just a series of joint ventures. Anyway I thought it was worth remarking.

    I expect Ford to overtake VW again when the US market recovers, the truck and CUV markets should come back and Ford will also finally have some Euro models to flog over here.
    It is no secret that VW has had NA on a backburner for years but recently they are showing signs of getting serious about the US market, finally opening a US factory (due in 2011) and getting some US specific models. Maybe nothing will come of it and they will decide (again) that the investment is better spent elsewhere, either way we’ll see what happens…

    When was the last time you ever were concerned with the manufacturer’s size and world position when shopping a car?

    Never, exactly.

    For the last few years, during their decline, I never thought about sticking to any brand because of their sales stats.

    I think Suzuki will really take off in North America once they bring the Swift over here. They are in need of an image car. The SX4 is already quite good, especially for the price, but it doesn’t do a lot for the brand. The Swift will define the brand and get people interested when they see one drive by.

    Who is Renault’s CEO?
    Who is Nissan’s CEO?

    The two companies own huge stakes of one another and share the same Chief Exec. Their numbers really should be combined (along with Dacia and RenaultSamsung). Just sayin.

    Also I see the note about GM’s minority joint ventures, but the other companies almost certainly included numbers from their JVs as well. China is awash in JV built VW santanas and Audi A6s.

    Renault and Nissan DO hold big chunks of each other, but it doesn’t work like that.

    Renault hold 44.4% of Nissan and Nissan hold 15% of Renault. Industry practice dictates that you only include sales figures from joint ventures or subsidiaries if you own more than 50%. That’s why Ford doesn’t include Mazda’s figure in Ford’s figures because they only own 33% of them. However, Toyota can include Daihatsu’s sales figures because they own more than 50% of them.

    Likewise, car companies can include joint ventures’s sales figures if they own more than 50%. But GM (no doubt) are including the SAIC-Wuling-GM joint venture in which GM is a minority share holder and SAIC are the majority, thus, making it SAIC’s sales’s figures, not GM’s.

    Personally, I think industry practice should be to take the relevant percentage of sales figure from the size of one’s stake in the company. For example, Ford can claim only 33% of Mazda’s sales figures.

    I wonder when the Kei Cars will come to NA. The Smart seems to have established a foothold in some circles, despite its shortcomings. I think the Kei Car could make some inroads, in urban markets.

    No, the Swift+ is a Canada only thing. They do still sell the Forenza and Reno which are Daewoo rips not unlike the Aveo, but I think they’re getting axed for 09.
