2010 Preakness Stakes Betting: The Contenders

Matthew Ross

Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver will be up against long horse betting odds Saturday at Pimlico as Calvin Borel looks to guide the horse to the second leg of the Triple Crown.

The May 15, 2010 Preakness Stakes betting action is right around the corner and SBRforum.com  and Bodog are getting you primed for the big horrse racing odds event.

With all of the Preakness Stakes betting contenders now confirmed, let’s break down the Preakness Stakes odds horses and jockeys.

Editor's Note: To see in depth analysis and Preakness odds detail for each horse and jockey for the 2010 Preakness Stakes simply click on their name below.

Super Saver betting 9/4 - Confirmed as an entrant in the Preakness Stakes, Super Saver won the 2010 Kentucky Derby by 2½ lengths. He can become the first horse in 32 years to win the Triple Crown with a win here and at the Belmont Stakes. Super Saver’s Preakness Stakes betting odds are 9/4 right now at Bodog. Meanwhile, his odds to win the Triple Crown are +475 to pull off the feat and -700 not to accomplish the rare race trifecta.

Jockey Calvin Borel is an ideal man to be at the helm. He’s now won three Kentucky Derbys and has won the Preakness in the past, not to mention also finishing runner-up in the middle leg of the Triple Crown. The odds are against them, but don’t count out Borel or Super Saver.

Paddy O’Prado betting 10/3 - Another horse confirmed for this year’s Preakness Stakes betting, he finished third at the Kentucky Derby and has placed well in 2010. Paddy did threaten to finish second at the Derby before settling into a third place finish. Jockey Kent Desormeaux has won the Preakness betting race twice and is a legendary driver in the sport. If things break well, don’t be surprised to see Paddy O’Prado in the winner’s circle.

Aikenite betting 20/1 - This is not a horse that will be talked about much as Preakness Stakes betting heats up. Without any meaningful wins to draw from, and a field of the very best, don’t expect Aikenite to be there down the stretch. Still, jockey Javier Castellano does have a 2006 Preakness win under his belt with Bernardini, so it wouldn’t be shocking to see him weave some magic and get Aikenite at least in contention.

Caracortado betting 25/1 - Now here is an interesting horse betting odds option at Bodog. He has several wins to tout, but has only ridden in California races. How will he react in the Preakess?

He is ridden by veteran Paul Atkinson, who has never been aboard a horse in a Triple Crown race. It’s hard to bet on lack of experience, but the performances that Caracortado has put up cannot be ignored. Bodog has Preakness Stakes odds that could be enticing for bettors looking for a fallback wager.

Pleasant Prince betting 15/1 - Without any wins in his six 2010 starts, not much is expected of this horse. However, Pleasant Prince is in good hands with Julien Leparoux aboard. He is a seasoned jockey that will help Pleasant Prince put together a respectable run.

Dublin betting 10/1 - The seventh place finisher at the 2010 Kentucky Derby, here’s another horse that’s winless in 2010. Dublin was as high as fifth during the derby race, but fell back. Jockey Garrett Gomez finished sixth at the derby on Lookin at Lucky, the victim of some bad traffic.

Schoolyard Dreams betting 10/1 - Ridden by six different jockeys in six career starts, this horse lacks that connection to a rider in order to have that all important chemistry intangible. But two wins and a pair of seconds does merit a mention to Preakness Stakes betting experts. Eibar Coa is the latest rider to get a short at this horse. The rider aboard Schoolyard Dreams has no Preakness experience, so don’t expect miracles.

Northern Giant betting 35/1 -  Northern Giant has one career win in nine starts and has finished behind some of the Bodog Preakness Stakes odds contenders. The jockey aboard this horse will be Terry Thompson, who is coming off his first Triple Crown ride. He rode Dublin to a seventh place finish at the Kentucky Derby. Another horse not to expect miracles from.

Jackson Bend betting 25/1 - While he finished 12th at the Derby, he did have five wins and four seconds in nine starts heading into Churchill Downs. A strong horse worth pondering for bettors, he will get the benefit of a legendary jockey riding him. Mike Smith is a Hall-of-Famer and has one Preakness win in 11 starts. Keep in mind this horse has 5 wins in 9 starts. Horse betting enthusiasts like those odds.

Lookin at Lucky betting 7/2 - Favored in the Derby and falling short, Lookin at Lucky will see a new jockey aboard for the Preakness Stakes. Martin Garcia will be saddled with a six-time winner and a horse that’s been trained by legend Bob Baffert. Garcia is a different jockey from this horse's Kentucky Derby effort. However, don’t be surprised to see Lookin at Lucky rebound nicely – provided he doesn’t hit traffic.

First Dude betting 20/1 - Named after former Gov. Palin’s husband, this horse’s only win came back in January, but he’s another horse than runs competitively. Jockey Ramon Dominguez will be making his eighth Preakness Stakes betting start, with his best finish being seventh.

Yawanna Twist betting 25/1 - With only four races so far, this horse has won two of them. Narrowly missing qualification for the 2010 Kentucky Derby, look out for this intriguing horse racing betting contender. Edgar Prado will be the jockey of choice for this race. He has finished as high as fourth four times in 13 starts at the Preakness.

Yawanna Twist is who's getting my bet. With a name like that, how can you not bet on this horse?

This is going to be a solid race. I think Super Saver stands a good chance, depending on the conditions tomorrow. It's definitely a tight field and going to be a great race.

I don't get it. What's the point of betting on a bunch of horses? Pretty stupid...
