The Town

The appellation by which this town is at present known to Englishmen - Carnarvon - is but a slightly corrupted spelling to suit the English pronounciation of the Welsh spelling - Caer-yn-arfon; Caer which signifies a castle, fortress or stronghold, yn is in; ar, the position opposite to, or beyond; and fon or von is the Welsh word for Angelsey. Thus we have Caer-yn Arfon, the fortress or camp opposite Angelsey. Giraldus Cambrensis, who accompanied Archbishop Baldwin in a journey though Wales in 1188, has mentioned the place among his chronicles of their march, and spells it Kaer-yn-arfon. Llewellyn the Great, too, granting a charter to the canons of Penmon, in Angelsey, dates the deed from Kaerinarfon, in the year 1221.
