Ship List - WILLIAM MILES - 1860

Early in the 1999 year I found that both my GreatGreatGrandparents came to Lyttelton on the clipper ship "WILLIAM MILES".
Alexander REID, 27, was a 2nd Mate crewman from Peterhead, Aberdeen, Scotland.
Amelia STEVENS, 21, came out with her parents and 9 siblings from St. Just in Penwith, Cornwall.

The couple was married at St. Michael's Church, Christchurch, just two weeks after landing.
There is talk among my family of a ship-board romance, and I guess that a cabin full of single girls on an 107 day voyage would have been pretty tempting to a young sailor, especially if he had executive privileges, such as a 2nd mate would have! Anyway, the nature of the romance on the ship is pure speculation on my part.
Alexander went back to Peterhead to settle his affairs, then returned in 1862 as 1st mate on the "MERMAID"; to a 7 month old daughter, my greatgrandmother. Alexander became harbour pilot in Sumner & Lyttelton and had another 13 children with Amelia til 1882.
