Wow! How did you do it? which soft use?
  •
  • Gwen Vanhee 7 months ago
    Thnx guys!

    @reanimatr
A custom-coded brush (actionscript) is used to draw the imagery. While drawing all data is recorded to be rendered (frame by frame) afterwards.
  • reanimatr 7 months ago
    This is Abobe Flash?
  • Gwen Vanhee 7 months ago
Well, Adobe Flash is the software but it's actionscript that does the tricks. This render/drawing system is build from scratch...
  •
  • Vadim Smakhtin 7 months ago
Love your style. Does it realtime?
  •
  • Gwen Vanhee 7 months ago
    Yes it does...
However, performance issues make it very sluggish.
  • Vadim Smakhtin 7 months ago
Hmm, it's pure AS3 or you use Flash IDE? I think flash must done things like this at 25-30 fps .
  • Gwen Vanhee 7 months ago
it's pure AS3, based on a drawing system which i use to create 120Megapixel prints...
  • Beeker 7 months ago
Can you give the as3 script a different audio file, and would it respond differently?

Trying to understand how this could be handdrawn, and actionscripted at the same time, while responding to the audio amplitude/frequencies, like a visualizer.

Seems like it's one or the other.

Either way it's beautiful, and again either way, scripted, handdrawn, it's tremendously organic.
  • Gwen Vanhee 7 months ago
Yep, different audio would give a different result, but the general look&feel; would be the same.

    As for the AS3/handdrawn:
I have a particle system which responds to movement , speed, rotation, mouse gestures, audio frequencies,...

This system, attached to the mouse, is being used as a 'brush'. So i 'draw' the general sense, direction & rotation by hand. The resulting imagery is code reaction to mouse gestures.

How did you draw, when the realtime performance is sluggish? Or did you have a placeholder when the audio is playing and later on rendered everything based on the data?

Irrespective, very stylish.. and gave me ideas to do something in Processing...
  • Gwen Vanhee 7 months ago
When drawing, a low-res version of the final result is shown on screen, optimizing the performance. Afterwards everything gets rendered in hi-res...

  • Yordi Uytersprot 7 months ago
    Hi Gwen!
I'm just amazed with your fabulous work.
Plus it's made in AS3, which is like great stuff!
I'm wondering if you could tell me more on the process of rendering the flash animation (result) frame by frame to a sequence of PNG's / JPG's.. Did you make it yourself, that rendering-system-program-thing? And are you willing to share it with the world? Feel free to let me know ^^.

    Kind regards, Yordi

  • Gwen Vanhee 7 months ago
    Hi Yordi,
I use Mark Knol's Image Saver Class to save each frame as a png. I'm sure there are other classes out there, but this one works really nice.

You can find the class + tutorial here:
    blog.stroep.nl/2008/08/as3-imagesaver-class-v10

and how you can make video's with it here:

Totally amazing. I would love to do something like this with some of my soundscapes. music.ramidonya.net Posted recordings are getting old but more to come, soon. Using experimental instruments and found sound files, lots of free improvisation. Fits really beautifully with the mood of your work! Thanks for the inspiration!!

    WOW, so hypnotic!!!

was reading your above post on how you created this piece, a lot of it went over my head if i'm honest.

do you need a lot of knowlege of scripts to create a similar style of work? how long did it take to make?
