New Electoral Commission created

A new Electoral Commission, integrating the responsibilities of the Chief Electoral Office and the current Electoral Commission, has been established by law and will be fully functional from 1 October 2010.

Between now and 1 October the new Commission’s three board members will be appointed and the functions and staff of the Chief Electoral Office and current Electoral Commission will be transferred to the new entity .

The new Electoral Commission is an independent Crown Entity created to provide voters, parties, candidates and the public with a more integrated, efficient and cost effective service.

It is planned that from October 2012 the Commission will assume statutory responsibility for the enrolment of voters and that the Electoral Enrolment Centre of New Zealand Post Ltd will deliver enrolment services under a contract with the Commission. Further legislation will be initiated to implement this.
