The state finals field for one sport already is determined. Most of the others are close. Here's a look at the Westside take on all the playoffs (and more):

Go here and click "state finals" for schedule and other info.

BOYS TRACK
One area-centric regional (West Lafayette) competed last night (click here for results), while two more (Bloomington North and North Central) were postponed to tonight.

State heat sheets (for next Saturday's meet) obviously won't be determined until all regionals are completed, so stay tuned...

SOFTBALL
As expected, weather has messed with things, but we do have one sectional champion on the Westside -- and it's not the one that was expected. In Class 4A's Sectional 12, Decatur Central avenged an earlier loss to Ben Davis with a 2-1 win Wednesday. The Hawks on Tuesday will face either Southport or defending 4A champion Center Grove in regionals.

One more area team still is alive, as Cascade will play No. 3 South Putnam in the final of Class 2A's Sectional 46 (time TBA). It could be close; the Cadets lost back-to-back one-run games to South Putnam in April.

BASEBALL
These sectionals aren't too far along, but already we'll have a new champion in Class 4A's No. 12. Defending champion Decatur Central fell 3-0 to Avon, with the Orioles moving on to play Tech in Monday's semifinals. Also on Monday: Brownsburg (a 10-2 winner over Ben Davis) vs. Pike (10-0 over Manual), with each winner moving on to the title game that night.

Other sectional games (in 3A, 2A and A) are either unreported, were postponed, or have yet to be played. Keep checking those brackets for updates...

GIRLS TENNIS
Sectional champions Brownsburg and Ben Davis gave it a go at regionals, with the former beating the latter 5-0 in Tuesday's first round. The 22nd-ranked Bulldogs then bowed out to No. 3 Park Tudor, 3-2, in the regional title game, and finished 19-4 overall.

"We had a very successful season," coach Karen Starkey said. "To be able to push Park Tudor was really nice for our program."

COLLEGES
Ben Davis junior/2011 Miss Basketball candidate Bria Goss has committed to play at Kentucky. Goss to our Kyle Neddenriep: "I was so impressed with the way they played (when watching them in person). ... One of the big things I was looking for in a school was that I wanted them to play the same style as Ben Davis: In-your-face defense and a fast pace." ...

Avon senior Brad Vivace -- a standout offensive lineman-turned-state-qualifying thrower in track and field -- has committed to throw the shot and the hammer at Louisville. More on this later on Indystar.com and in the Hendricks edition. ...

Another Avon standout, soccer player Trevor Schmidt, is headed to the University of Evansville, according to coach Phil Schmidt. ...

Pike's Samuel Weinberg was awarded the inaugural boys' Indiana High School Swimming and Diving Hall of Fame Harry Inskeep Scholarship. ...

Not long after finishing fourth at the Division II men's golf championships, former Brownsburg standout Seth Fair was named a first-team All-American by the Golf Coaches Association of America. Only eight others got such a distinction in 2010.

The North Central High School girls rugby team cruised into the state semifinals last weekend having out-scored its opponents, 371-24, but coach Suzi Dillon knew the Panthers would see a higher caliber of play in the postseason.

They did ..... and it didn't matter.

North Central (10-0) won its second consecutive state championship with a 39-0 victory over Noblesville in the semifinals and a 44-0 victory over Carmel in the championship in Columbus, Ind. on Saturday. It gave the program four titles in the past five years, plus the 2002 championship.

The Panthers controlled the game by winning almost all the scrums and rucks, according to Dillon, with Alex Moore also standing out on the backline. North Central was led by its typical balanced scoring with Megan Altman (15 points), Mariana Mesa (13), Missy Mattson (10), Aya Smith (10), Linda Albrecht (10), Masie Duncan (10) and Moore (10) all reaching double-digits between the two games.

"It doesn't get old and it was even better this time," said Dillon, who also credited assistant Erin Hansen. "Each year these girls win me over and I just want them to win in return for all the hard work and heart they put into the season. The games were a little more intense (than the regular season) but (my players) stepped it up just that much more. The other teams did come back even harder but we picked up our game to match that.

"When I heard the referee say there were three minutes left, I looked back at the girls and they were really excited. We were enough ahead that we knew we had it and everybody was jumping out of their shoes waiting to run on to the field.

Last season, the Lawrence North High School baseball team brought back a experienced nucleus of seniors that had won the 2008 Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference championship and their primary regular season goal was to repeat. After losing 11 seniors, this year's team had a different approach for the 2010 season.

"Last year we wanted to repeat. This year, we just wanted to compete," coach Richard Winzenread said. "We were splitting with everybody and after we lost to go to 5-5 (in the MIC) I said to my assistant, 'If we had closed out a couple of close games we could won this thing.' My assistant said, 'What do you mean? We're only two games out. The first place team is 7-5.' We still had a shot."

The Wildcats beat Warren Central twice by one run then, after Lawrence Central's Christian Montgomery threw a perfect game against them on Friday night, turned around and had their best performance of the season, beating Terre Haute South, 12-1 in five innings, and 1-0 to clinch a share of the title with Terre Haute North.

Lawrence North returned almost no pitching but Will Nolden -- see Thursday's NorthIndyStar or go to northindystar.com for a feature on Nolden's remarkable recovery from a broken arm -- established himself as an ace. He allowed six hits and struck out nine in shutting out Terre Haute South, with Ryan Stevens' sixth-inning homer providing the only offense. Evan Eyre established himself as a solid No. 2 starter -- getting the win and going 3-for-4 with a home run, double and four RBIs in the opener against Terre Haute South -- and Cory Meixner emerged as the team's top reliever.

"Things didn't go very well (against Lawrence Central) but I told our kids to throw that game away because it didn't mean anything," Winzenread said. "It was tough because it was our rival but we were going for the conference championship. The first game we came out on fire and won our first game (by the mercy rule) all year."

Nolden, who primarily played shortstop last season, and catcher Jordan West, who's defense has been a key to the pitching staff's success, were the only returning players, though Eyre would have been a regular if he hadn't broken his hand early in the season. Meixner his hitting over .350 with eight homers and a team-leading 34 RBIs and Phil Schwenk has played well defensively at short and gotten his batting average over .300.

Lawrence North will open North Central Sectional play against Arlington at 5 p.m. Thursday with the winner playing No. 1 Cathedral at 10 a.m. Monday for a berth in the championship.

"These kids knew we had to fight and scratch for every victory," Winzenread said. "To win the MIC three times in a row ... that's special. We're really happy with this one."

Roncalli High School volleyball player Caitlin Hansen was named to prepvolleyball.com's first team Gym Dandies and Brownsburg's Stephanie Rix third team. The team honors "full-time back row players who work their butts off during practice and play to help the team at all costs," according to a press release from the web site.

Hansen, who has signed to play at Indiana University, was honored after recording more than 1,000 digs during her career and making The Indianapolis Star's Super Team. Rex, who will play at Lipscomb, made The Indianapolis Star's All-West Team as a libero after compiling 647 digs and 60 aces for a 27-6 Brownsburg team.

Crispus Attucks has hired Victor Chukwudebe, an assistant the past two years at the school, as its new boys basketball coach.

Chukwudebe, 32, is a native of Springfield, Ill., and played in 120 games in four seasons for Illinois, where he averaged 3.2 points a game. He went on to play four seasons of professional basketball in Belgium, Brazil, Canada and Austria.

Chukwudebe takes over for Greg Orr, who will remain on as the athletic director at Attucks. The Tigers were 7-13 last season in their second year as a varsity program since reopening the school.

"I'm excited and nervous," Chukwudebe said. "The expectations are high because of what teams have done here in the past. But I think I'd approach the job the same way no matter where it was."

Before coming to Attucks, Chukwudebe spent four years as an assistant coach at Lanphier High School in Springfield, Ill., his alma mater.

What did we learn from last week's Sectionals? A few observations follow:

- Hobart's Jarvis McMillian has emerged as one of the state's top underclassmen by virtue of his 48.36 400. Last year, he was a 100/200 finalist while running as a sophomore for Gary Wirt.

- Nate Hendershot of Pendleton Heights is right where he ought to be at this point of the season, judging from his 1:53.48 800-meter effort. Clemson is his college choice.

- Runner-up in the 3200 in 2009, Carroll's James Martin is ready to improve considerably on that performance. His 9:12.94 last week is already almost two seconds ahead of his Finals time of a year ago. He's only a junior

- Two Fort Wayne 4x400 teams, Northrop and Snider, had identical 3:18.70 times. Watch out, Indianapolis-area contenders!

- Bloomington South's Gabe Hull established himself as one of Indiana's top 11th grade discus throwers of all time. His 190-6 in the Sectional was better than every winning mark in the Finals since 1998.

- In girls' action, two 10th graders to watch are East Central 800 ace Taylor Wiley (2:14.90) and Westview's Skyler Carpenter in the 300 hurdles (43.57).

- Last and foremost, Ellie McCardwell's 13-7 vault is currently third best nationally. The Pendleton senior is headed to Stanford.

Playoffs, playoffs, playoffs!

That's what's going on in all of Indiana, not just the Westside. But area teams certainly have enjoyed their share of success so far. Here goes...

TRACK AND FIELD
Girls: Hendricks County champion Plainfield repeated at the South Putnam sectional, edging second-place Brownsburg 119-115.5. Click here for all results (top four finishers and those meeting the state standard qualify for regionals).

At Southport, Ben Davis just missed out on a title, falling to host Southport 134.5-133.5, with Pike a close third at 131.5. Here are those individual results. And for Monrovia and Mooresville qualifiers (at Bloomington North), click here.

Boys: No surprise -- No. 1 Ben Davis ran past No. 13 Pike at Ben Davis, 213-137.5. Naturally, a ton of Giants qualifiers (and other Westsiders); check them out here.

Among Hendricks teams, Brownsburg emerged as champion, beating Plainfield 114.5-100 (here are the full results). And for the Monrovia/Mooresville results (at Bloomington North), click here.

BASEBALL
The baseball draws were released Tuesday. One area team will defend its title, while the rest will aim for them. Click the following for brackets in 4A, 3A, 2A and A.

-That defending champion: Decatur Central, in Class 4A Sectional 12. The favorite that year: Brownsburg, which also should be the favorite this time around (even after three straight losses). The fourth-ranked Bulldogs are 21-6, and take on Ben Davis in the first round (6 p.m. Thursday), with the winner playing either Pike or Manual in the Monday semifinal. The defending-champion Hawks take on Avon on Wednesday, with the winner there facing Tech in the semifinals. The title game (at Brownsburg, like the rest of the games) is set for Monday at 7 p.m.

-Plainfield drew a bye into the Terre Haute North sectional semifinals, where the Quakers will play the host (at noon on Monday). Mooresville will take on Northview at 7 p.m. Thursday, with the winner facing either Martinsville or Terre Haute South in the semifinals. The title game also is set for Monday.

-The typically Westside-heavy Sectional 46 (at North Putnam) was won by South Putnam last year, over a Cascade team that entered the postseason as favorites. That's the way it often goes, according to Cadets coach Jason Thompson, who called the eight-team field "wide-open" once again this year. Cascade will play the host Cougars at 7 p.m. Thursday -- the fourth first-round matchup (after Monrovia-Cloverdale, Tri-West & Speedway and South Putnam-Covenant Christian). Semifinals and finals are scheduled for Monday.

-Cardinal Ritter won't have it easy in the Class 2A Scecina sectional, with Park Tudor (which beat the Raiders twice earlier this year) the first-round opponent (4 p.m. Wednesday). The winner there takes on either Scecina or Triton Central in Saturday's semifinals, with Washington, Indian Creek and No. 5 Heritage Christian on the other side of the bracket (the title game is scheduled for 5 p.m. Monday).

-At the 3A Lebanon sectional, Danville will play Western Boone in the first round (7:30 p.m. Thursday; the Warriors swept the Stars in two games earlier this week), with the winner there taking on Lebanon or North Montgomery in one semifinal (11 a.m. Monday). No. 4 Crawfordsville and Southmont will play in the second semifinal, with the title game scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday.

-Bethesda Christian will play University in the first round (5 p.m. Friday) of the four-team Lutheran sectional, after beating University twice during the regular season. Host Lutheran -- which beat Bethesda Christian twice this season -- plays Indiana Deaf in the other semifinal (5 p.m. Thursday). The final is set for 1 p.m. Saturday.

GIRLS TENNIS
The girls' tennis sectionals started this week and are ongoing through the weekend, with some play underway and others delayed by weather. Here are all the brackets.

CLUB SPORTS
Brownsburg's rugby club is in Sandy, Utah, for the 2010 USA U19 National Championships, which begin today and run through Sunday. The Bulldogs won their first Midwest championship on May 10, giving them the bid.
