Washington and Lee University
One of the greatest players ever to put on a Washington and Lee baseball uniform was Emerson Dickman '37.
The talented performer excelled as a pitcher and an outfielder and helped lead W&L to some of its greatest successes. As a sophomore, Dickman led the 1935 W&L nine to the Southern Conference championship and a then-school record 17 victories against just four defeats with two ties. Dickman was the winning pitcher in eight of those victories, a record which still stands. He also struck out 73 batters for the season.
An excellent hitter, he batted .321 in 1936 and was a captain elect for the 1937 season. However, he signed with the Boston Red Sox following his junior year and debuted in the big leagues in June of 1936. Dickman pitched five seasons with the Red Sox, compiling a record of 22-15.
His best season was in 1939 when he went 8-3 with a 4.43 earned run average out of the bullpen. Dickman ranked third in the American League with 48 appearances that season and was sixth in saves (5) to help the Red Sox to a second place finish in the league behind the New York Yankees. Dickman's teammates on that squad included future baseball hall of famers Joe Cronin, Bobby Doerr, Jimmie Fox, Lefty Grove and Ted Williams.
