Lou Lamoriello told Lowell booster club it was 'financially impossible' to stay

By Rich Chere/The Star-Ledger

June 01, 2010, 2:42PM

LouL-hindash.jpgLou Lamoriello told the Lowell Devils booster club it was financially impossible to continue a relationship with that city.In response to an effort from the Lowell Devils Booster Club to keep the AHL affiliate in that city, Lou Lamoriello sent a letter to to that group saying it was "financially impossible" under a new lease.

The Devils will move their AHL farm team to Albany, N.Y., for the 2010-11 season.

Lamoriello's letter, dated May 19, was addressed to members of the Lowell Devils Booster Club. It read:

I want to thank you for your petition of March 23rd with attached signatures. Be assured it was very much appreciated and, more importantly, taken to heart.

Please know that we did everything we possibly could to stay in Lowell, but the changes that were presented to us in the Lease made it financially impossible. Although we sustained considerable loss, we were hopeful of staying in Lowell, but not to the extent that we would have had to accept what was presented to us.

Be assured your loyalty and support were very much appreciated at each and every game that we played in Lowell. I only wish that we were able to work something out.

Sincerely, Lou Lamoriello.

Sounds like the same note we will be hearing when Kovalchuk is no longer a Devil, when Parise walks...

But, we will probably have Paul Martin to show for the losses! Woo Hoo!

Never lets go of his home grown talent? What about Rafalski, Gomez, Madden, Gionta (his salary I know), and etc. What makes Parise different only from his salary. You have to keep either Kovy or Parise. Hell I'll take both at the expense of Martin. Then sign Foster.

Whats makes Parise different is that he's an elite player that doesnt come around often. You can get another gionta and gomez and madden and Rafalski but a parise is hard to come by. They're not nearly in the same boat as Parise and he's a no brainer to resign whereas we could do without an overpaid Madden, Gionta, Rafalski, and wayyyyy overpaid Gomez

They need to move the AHL team to some where in central New Jersey. (Bridgewater/New Brunswick/Edison)

There is an article in the post that Mottau and the Devils are reaching an agreement for a contract extension. IF THIS IS TRUE...Lamorillo needs to be fired! Mike Mottau is a liability on the ice each and every shift. He is a 7th Defensemen used as a top line defensemen. This will only extend another early exit. If Lamorillo seriously wants to address the team, players like Mottau need to go. He has done nothing for the good of this team. He just adds to the worst defensive corps in the league. He has no skills, cannot control the puck, is pushed around too easily, and just is the worst defensemen in the league. The Devils need to get younger and bring up players like Eckford, Corrente, Gelinas, and other young defensemen from Lowell/Albany. Signing a 32yr old under-achieving defensmen will only hurt this team! Also, the post says that Martin and Lamorillo have decided to wait until a coach is announced before contract talks. Thats just another way of saying, Paul Martin feels the franchise is in disarray and doesn't want to play for some crap coach that will leave after one or two seasons. He wants to play for a coach that is willing to grind it out and want to stay passed 2 seasons. If PAUL MARTIN feels this way, whos to say the Parise doesn't feel the same way. This franchise is going down the toilet because Lamorillo is stuck in the past! His signing of coaches that don't last a season, players that are over the hill, his lack of addressing issues like defense, his support for coaches to start a 37 year old goalie who is on the down side of his career about 72 games a season, and his lack of using youth has caused this once feared franchise to be a laughing stock of the NHL. If Lamorillo signs this waste of minutes named Mike Mottau, Lamorillo has lost a season ticket holder! I'm done with this crap if Mottau is resigned!

NJCUPS:

The Parent club sells out 25% of the time; why in the world would Lou and VDB put another team in competition with themselves? They've already got the Trenton ECHL team; if they could switch out that franchise elsewhere (Poconos or AEB area) and move the AHL team to Trenton so that folks could see their upcoming draft picks, that might make sense. 3 clubs within the same ownership this close to each other doesn't work economically. There should be reasonable radio and some limited cable away game coverage for the AHL club as well.

Fin..., I believe you are right and the signing of Mottau means we are not signing Martin.

I agree with squidboy.

I can almost guarantee we wont resign Kovalchuk, but Lou WILL resign guys that we DONT need who are nothing but garbage. Mike Mottau is the biggest one. Who wants to bet we won't resign Kovy but Lou will resign guys like Mottau? And i can almost guarantee he'll sign Hitchcock as our head coach. Worst idea ever. Lou needs to go.

This is such a joke. A Boston area city, Lowell, raising the price of a lease for a team from NJ, go figure.
I received the call yesterday from the Devils to extend my ticket package and I declined. They said, 'Is there anything we can do to help you change your mind?' I said, yeah, sign a superstar, bring in young talent and some defense, a head coach and cheaper tickets and make it past the first round. Their response??????? The woman laughed!!! Are you kidding me? Even the front office knows they dont have a solid fan base. Ridiculous!

I just can't get worked up anymore. Are wretched group of defensemen will be the death of us for many seasons to come in the postseason if it doesnt get an overhaul quick, and here we are talking about re-signing Mike Mottau.

Who cares about Lowell. I like the team leaving for Albany.
Everybody needs to settle down. I do agree with the fact that Lou may..MAY have lost it, we are not sure yet. Parise will be signed. I don't care about Kovy, if he want to win then we will see his business side. 7mill a season. Motts drive's me nuts not sure why he stays around but he does. This is Lou's do or die year. HEAD COACH, FREE AGENTS and the TEAM HAS to get to the 2nd round if not the Eastern Conf finals or LOU is gone! Just remember it could be a lot worse just look across the river where money is no object. Don't let the frustration of 3 early exits comit bad decesions. I would not sign if I was Paul martin either. Gomer had a chance to be locked in Lou and Gomers father had a rift thats why he left.

Albany is a much better location than Lowell, a much nicer arena and easier to get to. As for marshmello mottau, it louie signs him it is proof of his alzhiemers and dementia being in advanced stages. I could care less if martin signs but i agree if are true whats the possibility Zach would want to stay. He is the one this team needs to build around. As for a coach I like Fetisov or Muller. Without a 1st round choice what can the Devils hope for?

I am sorry I feel this way but the negative comments posted here about Lou Lams is the way I feel about him today, and that's said.
