Typhoon Krosa lashed China's east coast today with torrential rains and powerful winds that have already killed at least five people in nearby Taiwan.
The typhoon hit land near the border of densely populated Zhejiang and Fujian provinces, with winds of 78 kilometres an hour.
More than one million people were evacuated in the two provinces ahead of the storm while schools and airports in some areas were shut down as a precaution.
The typhoon moved north in the direction of the eastern city of Shanghai, which is hosting the Special Olympics.
Organisers of the event said storms forced some changes to the competition schedule for the eleven outdoor sports events.
More rain, strong winds and lower temperatures are forecast for the city tomorrow.
