The oldest siamang in captivity, Unk, died.  The newly constructed Peck Welcome Center (PWC) opened in 1988.  The PWC was designed as an exhibit and meeting area for special events.  It included a multi-media theatre, exhibit hall, and bookstore.  The project cost $3.3 million, and included the later construction of the Taylor Family Humboldt Penguin exhibit.  Also during the year, the Education Center, sponsored by the Wisconsin Dairy Council of Wisconsin, opened.  The building provided three classrooms, a resource center, an exhibit room and a number of administrative offices.  The cost of the Education Center project was $508,000.
