Update on I-84*/I-87 Interchange Project: December 7, 2009
Phase 1 was let in May 2003 and completed in October 2004. Phase 2 was let in November 2004 and was completed in Fall and Winter 2009. Phase 3 was let in November 2006 and was also completed in Winter 2009.
Construction Contract Phase 1 - COMPLETED
The contracting firm of KETCO, Inc. of Glenmont, New York completed construction work on the first contract. This phase included the construction of new exit and entrance ramps between I-84 Eastbound and Route 300; a new traffic signal on Route 300; and extending and widening the northbound Thruway exit ramp. The work was completed at a cost of $5.5 million.
Construction Contract Phase 2 - COMPLETED
Phase 2 of the I-84/87 Interchange Reconstruction Project is complete. Sitework and utility work has been completed, as well as the new combined maintenance building, two new salt sheds, a cold storage building, a vehicle storage building, and a State Police building. In addition, access roads and stormwater detention ponds have been completed.
The new toll facilities which include a new toll utility building, separate entering and exiting toll plazas with high-speed E-ZPass, and covered walkways between the plazas are also complete. In addition, roadway tie-ins to the Phase 3 work are complete. Environmentally friendly "green" technology has also been incorporated into the design of the buildings to enhance energy efficiency.
The $59.5 million contract was let on November 24, 2004. Construction work commenced in March 2006 by The Pike Company, from Rochester, New York. The new entering toll plaza opened on July 7, 2009 providing direct access to the Thruway from I-84 and Route 300. The new exiting plaza opened in September 2009.
Construction Contract Phase 3 - COMPLETED
Phase 3 of the I-84/87 Interchange Reconstruction Project is complete.
The $75 million contract for Phase 3 was awarded to A Servidone, Inc./B. Anthony Construction Corporation, (Joint Venture) from Castleton, New York. Construction work commenced in March 2007.
The third phase includes the construction of all remaining roadways, ramps, and bridges in the interchange, directly connecting I-84 to I-87. The six new bridges in the project have been completed. Widening of an existing bridge was also completed as part of this contract. The contract also provided for the installation of two traffic signals on Route 300 and construction of a new larger tandem lot. This phase of the project is complete, with the new direct connection between I-84 and I-87 now in service.
