While the NW offers infinite opportunities to enjoy the outdoors, we also have several professional, semi-professional, and college teams that you can enjoy indoors (or at least an indoor open-air stadium). Here’s a guide to help you navigate NW spectator sports, as well as activities and sports you can take advantage of with our varied surroundings.
Football
With a 2006 Superbowl appearance and a respectable showing in the 2007 playoffs, the Seahawks have grown from a perennial disappointment to an AFC powerhouse. With Mike Holmgrem at the helm and his patented west coast offense, it’s only a matter of time before the Seahawks win the first Superbowl of their 33-year history.

The Mariners, while young relative to other teams (they came to Seattle in ’77) have a smattering of milestones to their credit including Randy Johnson’s 1990 no-hitter, Ken Griffey Jr. and Sr. playing on the same roster, a 1995 AL West title, 2001’s record setting 116 win season, and Ichiro’s 2004 single season hit record.

Soccer
The Seattle Sounders FC will begin play in Major League Soccer’s 2009 season at Qwest Field, bringing the country’s highest level of soccer to the city for the first time. With Drew Carey as a minority owner, the franchise promises to be bit of an oddity. It’s been decided registered fans will have the option of retaining or firing the general manager every four years, and that the team will have a marching band of 50 or more on hand to lead the crowd in chants and revelry.

Collegiate
The Husky football team has 15 Pac-Ten titles, seven Rose Bowl wins and two National Championships to their credit, but with four consecutive losing seasons, fans and alumni are starting to grumble. The school is also host to the myriad other NCAA athletic disciplines, though no star shines as bright as the beloved Huskies’.
