Jan Magnussen to contest NASCAR race at Infineon
NASCAR has added another international star to its driver lineup for next weekend's road race at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif.
Four days after Team Red Bull announced that two-time DTM champion Mattias Ekstrom will race for it at the venue known formerly as Sears Point, Phoenix Racing said that Magnussen will attempt to qualify its Hendrick Motorsports-backed Chevrolet for the race on June 20.
The 36-year-old Dane is a veteran of the European open-wheel ladder system, Formula One, CART, Grand-Am and the American Le Mans Series, and he started second on Saturday for Corvette Racing in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Magnussen has won the GT1 class at Le Mans four times and claimed the 2008 GT1 ALMS championship along with co-driver Johnny O'Connell.
“We're extremely excited to have a road racer of this caliber available to drive for us at Sonoma,” said Phoenix Racing owner James Finch. “Jan has tested Sprint Cup cars in the past, and his résumé speaks for itself. He will give us an opportunity to not only qualify well, but run up front and compete.”
Magnussen said, “It's no secret that NASCAR has been a goal of mine, and I'm very appreciative of the opportunity Phoenix Racing is providing. Through my relationship with [General Motors], I've had the chance to test for Hendrick Motorsports, so I'm comfortable in the Sprint Cup cars and understand what to expect.
“I'm quite familiar with the racetrack and confident in my ability to compete at a high level. It will be an exciting weekend, and I look forward to the entire experience.”
