Seattle's Earshot Jazz Festival
Earshot Jazz Festival
The Earshot Jazz Festival is a three-week event held from October 19th to November 9th in concert halls, clubs and community centers all around Seattle. It aims to present a range of jazz artists from the big names to the little guys. There will be a wide array of activities to choose from, including performances by some well-known and some emerging artists from around the world, a film series showing rare jazz films, photo exhibits, panel discussions, and educational programs.
The festival is put on by the nonprofit music and arts organization Earshot Jazz, which was formed in 1984. Earshot’s goal is to support jazz and musical awareness in our community. The festival is in its 20th year and there are many new acts and old favorites to enjoy. You can check out an artist you admire or learn about a new musician in a variety of venues in Seattle.
With all that’s going on, it can be a challenge deciding what is worth seeing. It can be very overwhelming for a newcomer to jazz. To try to ease that stress, we have put together a list of highlights we feel are worth checking out.
Highlights
Billy Bang Quartet & Paul Rucker Ensemble
The Billy Bang Quartet is a true blues establishment and definitely worth a listen. Seattleite Paul Rucker, who recently won the Spotlight Award from Seattle Magazine, is an amazingly talented cellist. He will be opening with his new ensemble. Between the two, it’s bound to be a good show. It will be held Sunday, Oct. 19, at the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center. The show starts at 8 p.m. and tickets are $18 general.
Seattle Repertory Theatre w/ James Moody
Another event not to miss is the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra performing with James Moody. Moody is an NEA Jazz Master. This will be a 4-day residency that includes oral history interviews, educational programs, and two concerts. It will be held at the Nordstrom Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15-$38.
Saxophonist Ravi Coltrane

Horvitz / Miles / Previte Trio
