Gary Richard Herbert was born May 7, 1947 in American Fork, Utah and grew up in Oren, Utah. He attended Brigham Young University. Herbert became Utah’s 17th Governor on August 11, 2009 after Governor Huntsman was confirmed U.S. Ambassador to China. Herbert was first elected as Utah sixth Lieutenant Governor on November 2, 2004. As Lieutenant Governor, Herbert led state efforts concerning homeland security, transportation, water and rural affairs issues. Prior to his election as Lieutenant Governor, Mr. Herbert served 14 years on the Utah County Commission, earning many awards for his civic and community service. Herbert has also served as the President of the Utah Association of Counties, where he was named as Utah's Outstanding County Commissioner and County Elected Official. He is also the recipient of the National Outstanding Republican County Elected Official of the Year award. A realtor by profession, Herbert is a former President of the Utah Association of Realtors. Herbert is also a veteran of the Utah Army National Guard. Herbert and his wife, Jeanette, are the proud parents of six and grandparents of ten. |
