AMERICA'S ORIGINAL LIVING MUSEUM OF ANTIQUE AEROPLANES

http://www.oldrhinebeck.org/

Hi,

My name is Mike Kelly and I live in Virginia, USA.

My father, William Kelly (1901-1997), was one of two young boys who were on the cliffs that day and he claimed they were the first people on the scene after Bleriot 'crash-landed' there. I and my family are searching for photos of the event so we would greatly appreciate any help you can give us - directions to websites, etc.

If we can can help you in any way then please ask.

I am attaching a photo of my Dad in 1968. He was visiting us in NY State and we went to the Rhinebeck Aerodrome to see the old planes flying. He mentioned his experience and they had him recount his tale to the whole crowd! Also there was a Bleriot XI there. I do not remember if it was a replica or a real one. In the photo the propellor looks like a really old one. Currently they have a real one but I don't know it that is the same one as in 1968.

Regards,

Michael Kelly [mjkflorida@hotmail.com]

Twp great sites (with many links) devoted to early aviation pioneers.

http://www.aerodrome.nu/

This site features the world's oldest still-flying airplane - Mikael Carlson's Thulin-manufactured Bleriot which Mikael flew across the English Channel on July 25, 1999 - duplicating Louis Bleriot's feat ninety years earlier.

Blériot XI

A two-seat Bleriot XI model that was built in kit form in the US in the early part of the century. It currently has a 80-hp Continental engine in place of the 35-hp Anzani engine it originally carried.

The Collings Foundation Bleriot XI is based in Stow, MA and may be available for limited engagements in 2002 and 2003. Please contact the Collings Foundation for more information.

OLD RHINEBECK AERODROME

Christchurch, New Zealand, replica Bleriot XI on display at the local Air Force Museum.

http://www.afw.co.nz

The replica is there by virtue of the Bleriot XI being New Zealand's first military aircraft. That
distinction however was fairly short-lived. In 1913, just a few months after the craft had
been imported into the country, and the pilot suitably trained, the pilot flew the craft on its first official flights. The first passenger taken up in this government-funded machine was not some government big-wig or elected official, but rather a local showgirl !

Soon after, the government fired the pilot and sold the Bleriot.

Swiss Hans FURRER's Flying BLERIOT XI

I started to build the Blériot in 1984 and made the first official flight on April 1st 1999.

I followed exactly the Rozendaal drawings and I had some original parts like wheels, turnbuckles, ignition switch and also the engine is an original 6-cylinder Anzani from 1910.

That's why this aircraft is registered a historical and not as experimental.

On May 21st 2000 I I took off for a circuit around the airport when the engine failed and then I had to make an emergency landing. The whole landing gear, many parts of the fuselage, both wingspars of the left wing were broken. Now I was working for one and a half year on it and now the airplane is ready for flight again with an other 6-cyl Anzani with 60hp (the other had 40hp only).

Best regards

Hans Furrer

Very extensive set of links to websites devoted to early aircraft from Pioneer era, Great war and Golden age.  Nice photos and details on the Bleriot XI.  Interesting comparative performance spreadsheet on many aircraft.

http://www.wright-brothers.org/

Exceptional historical site, tracing the Wright Brothers development step by step, including many references to Louis Bleriot and other French aviation pioneers.

"The Wright Redux Association, based in Glen Ellyn, IL, is on a mission to reproduce the 1903 Wright Flyer. No group has ever successfully built a working replica of the first-ever powered aircraft, although many have tried. Our objective is to build and fly our machine before the end of 2002." - from the website

Curriculum Wright Again

Curriculum
"The Wright Again project follows the development of the first powered aircraft from the time Wilbur and Orville Wright are young boys in 1878 through December 17, 1903—the date of the first flight. This page is a list of all of the educational materials developed for the Wright Again project by date. All of the Wright Again project content adheres to National Science Standards. New materials will be added right up through December, 2003." - from the website

This is a great historical resource and offers a monthly newsletter list informing you when new educational materials are available.  The intention is to continue to add features corresponding to the 100th anniversary of the event, so new items will be added through the end of 2003.
