Opera Desktop Team

HTML5, and then some

, , , ,

The web is moving quickly these days, and Opera would like to stay at the forefront of open web standards. Opera has been promoting HTML5 since the beginning (and HTML5 actually has its roots at Opera), and in this build we have added four features related to HTML5 and other open standards, and an update for a previous implementation:

We have also added sets of specific fonts to be used for CJK web sites, which should improve readability. We would appreciate your feedback on this.

In addition to these new/improved features there are quite a few bug fixes for Linux/FreeBSD. Mac users will notice that plug-ins will generally perform better too. Take a look at the changelog for more information.

Note that there are no Linux PPC builds for this snapshot.

WARNING: This is a development snapshot of Opera. It is released for testing purposes, and there may be serious bugs and unfinished features.

Geolocation demo fails for me (red-color "failed" text) despite getting the User Agreement and toolbar.

WebM demo seemingly fails as well.
This is what I get: http://i47.tinypic.com/2rfr3h2.png

Win7x64 location Greece

fresco 14. June 2010, 11:43

Since the Saturday build my middle mouse button doesn't do anything in Opera (it is set to open the link in a background tab).
Using Win7x64, Setpoint 6.1 and and Logitech MX1000. It worked perfectly until build 3413.
/edit: I just figured out that it works when I set my middle mouse button to "Open" within Opera. However it does NOT WORK when I set it to "Open in new tab" or "Open in background tab". Please fix this!

The new features:
- WebM seems to work great although the video pauses when I right-click the page (audio doesn't pause).
- GeoLocation, Offline Apps and COM also work great
- the Web Worker didn't seem to work for me somehow ...

Oh, and before going final: Please fix these skin issues under Win7x64:

Hey, Sterkrig you don't need to mention this every single snapshot. I noticed you complained about others repeating issues but you are starting to do it yourself. P:

Just look out in future change logs for further font work and if nothing is mentioned you should not expect a change (yet).

EDIT: We know that we have a couple more things that need adjusting to improve the situation for a minority of users.

haruto8861 14. June 2010, 12:16

DSK-279742 (Incorrect font used for UTF8 page without lang specified) returns.
It is a pardon that I am made to have already written the bug report of this problem.

Geoloation work on Linux is not finished. It is only the start of the work. it is finished for the other two platforms (Mac and Windows). More updates on this will be coming your way soon.

Volkodav 14. June 2010, 12:17

Same as Bill P mentioned here on Ubuntu x86_64- CPU usage too high

samMD 14. June 2010, 12:18

ha Bing included default in opera and has a speed dial search excellent!

True enough in a window, perhaps, but when maximised the window has no border anyway.

Fixing the bug should have restored the "Chrome drag area" not broken the "Show only when needed" setting.

blang 14. June 2010, 12:20

*right click, open in background tab still doesn't work the right way
*still have bug DSK-297676 :frown: (get duplicate characters with fn+option+number)

Giuseppe Bilotta 14. June 2010, 12:20

Geolocation not working for me either. Accepted the terms, enabled, changed the settings from -1 to 2 ... always puts me somewhere in New York, almost on the other side of the Earth wrt of where I am 8-D

Giuseppe Bilotta 14. June 2010, 12:20

Then it is expected that it doesn't work entirely correctly yet.

I have updated the main blog post to clarify this.

Jacek Jędrzejewski 14. June 2010, 12:28

DSK-301554, my widget "RMF RDS" http://widgets.opera.com/widget/7354/ does not work on 10.60, because you have broken something

Шуйский Николай [krigstask, Ŝtérkrìg] 14. June 2010, 12:29

Hey, Sterkrig you don't need to mention this every single snapshot. I noticed you complained about others repeating issues but you are starting to do it yourself.

Well, I've got nothing against small comments about kinda major issues not mentioned in changelog or known issues d-:E
Personally I always search comments for some keywords like "fonts" or something before anything else, if I have my own petty pending bug (-%E

Just look out in future change logs for further font work and if nothing is mentioned you should not expect a change.

It'd be better if we heard anything about our fonts. Simple "Yep, seen the bug, WIP" would do. "Blurry fonts on some Linux distros" in Known Issues is all I want, really.

Bill P 14. June 2010, 12:34

bookmarks process in 64bit Linux seems to be performing much better, as in not hanging the system for up to 30 sec or more when deleting or opening a bookmark's properties. But still not as quick as earlier versions, as there's still a lag (<2 sec) though not a system hang cause of cpu spike
