Best Story

A good story can move you to tears. It can make you think. It can stay with you long after you've finished the game. In other words, while the gameplay may be what first draws you into a game, it's the story that so often keeps you invested. But a story isn't just about what happens between the beginning and the end; it's also about the delivery. Great dialogue delivered by great characters, the twists and turns of a winding plot, and the thrill of extraordinary circumstances can make a great story wriggle under your skin and keep you thinking about it even when you aren't playing. This year's greatest stories took us across the world, through fantastical realms, and into the past, but one compelling tale stood above the others.

Dragon Age: Origins

GameSpot's Best Games of 2009 Readers' Choice Winner

From the makers of Mass Effect, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and Baldur's Gate comes Dragon Age: Origins, an epic tale of violence, lust, and betrayal. The survival of humanity rests in the hands of those chosen by fate. You are a Grey Warden, one of the last of an ancient order of guardians who have defended the lands throughout the centuries. Betrayed by a trusted general in a critical battle, you must hunt down the traitor and bring him to justice. As you fight your way towards the final confrontation with an evil nemesis, you will face monstrous foes and engage in epic quests to unite the disparate peoples of a world at war. A romance with a seductive shapeshifter may hold the key to victory, or she may be a dangerous diversion from the heart of your mission. To be a leader, you must make ruthless decisions and be willing to sacrifice your friends and loved ones for the greater good of mankind.

I just finished Cryostasis after putting it off for a very long time and I must say the story really was incredible. A bit confusing, but after looking back, reading the diary and replaying key sequences, I understood it a lot better.

Seeing it win the editor's choice award pleases me.

Now I have to decide when I'll ever continue playing Dragon Age: Origins (and its expansion(s))..

Its hard to compare stories of dragon age and cryostasis. One is Sci-Fi FPS the other one is RPG and does not have a linear story.

First off, let me start by saying this is only my opinion. The opinion of someone you don't know, probably never will know, and and will forget 10 minutes after you finish reading my post.

Dragon Age: Origins' story was really forgettable. It wasn't bad but it wasn't good either. The overall story was pretty bland and never got me really interested. I think what was good and what most people find good (and are mistaking for a good story) is the characters. The characters were done very well and everything from the dialogue you would hear between your party members as you travel to your own interaction with them were well thought out and done to great effect. But that is only writing and dialogue (which the game won and deserved). The story itself was predictable and I never cared to see what would happen next. A good story should keep you wanting to see what happens next, and not stop until you do. I could easily save and put my controller down for a rest at any time. Some of you may say that you really did never want to put the controller down and stop. But, I would question if you really felt that way because of the story, or because you loved the gameplay and excitement of fighting, looting, and leveling up. Now that's not to say that nobody could have enjoyed the story, but you should probably read more good novels when you can.

Again, this is only my opinion (and one suggestion at the end).

@SLICKR392 lol? Modern Warfare 2? The story is practically littered with bits of garbage all over the place. Open your eyes, read a book, and understand how a story is generated. You could always go back to pre school and do that.

Well, I didn't try cryostasis. and Dragon Age's plot sure wasn't super original, but man alive does it give you the power to make some tough choices and actually see the consequences in action. Great game!

laughable...Cryostasis has one of the best stories ever in gaming history, and Dragon Age's is as recycled as you can get... But I knew this was going to happen. It's a gamer's choice and about 1% of gamers played Cryostasis, and from those 0.2% understood its story.
