Wenger: Maradona hype hinders Argentina

Tue Jun 08 09:03PM

In his latest video blog for Eurosport, Arsene Wenger runs the rule over Argentina coach Diego Maradona.

The Arsenal boss believes that, while the team clearly respect Maradona, the former World Cup winner is too closely connected to his team.

Wenger tells Eurosport's Soccer City show that Maradona needs to take a step back and stop the media hype that surrounds him from affecting the players when they take to the pitch.

  3. Wenger actually knows what he's talking about and has great football knowledge unlike half the media nowadays just read a Paul Parker blog to see the bias and moronic stuff the media write nowadays, im a Chelsea fan but think he would be the right person to blog on the world cup

  4. Quit the moaning, this is a treat - I haven't seen anything like this anywhere else! Although (As!) a Spurs fan I have a lot of respect for Wenger. He's really analysing the psychological distance between a former star player and the team he's in charge of. Shades of Hoddle? Needs more detail - how will Maradona (who looks like an old lady!) get the best out of Messi, for instance?

  6. Top manager, he really knows what he's on about. Its weird because had cambiasso, zanetti and lavezzi been included this would have been arguably one of the best Argentinian squads ever, and had they had a better manager they would be up there as the main favorites no doubt, shame though, at least them not being as good makes for a less predictable tournament, and thats not even including what maradona gets up to!

  11. A lot of talents are wasted in places like Africa. If Mr. Wenger is serious he should take over a national team from these countries to Fifa World Cup 2014 in Brazil. It is easier to see from analysis what a manager has spent months to build. Looking from decision that cost Arsenal the CL 2009/2010, one can point to mistakes he made. I just hope Wenger provides a better analysis than hypes that other enjoy. We need a better report on Football unbias and compressive and complete.

  12. I love Mr Wenger, whom I consider a fantastic coach, but I honestly he's wrong here. I don't think Maradona hype hinders Argentina, in fact I think it's the exact opposite: the media hype is so much focused on Maradona that it totally liberates his own players who don't have to worry about facing the press anymore. It's pretty much identical to what Mourinho does with his teams. José attracts so much hype around his own persona that the media only talk about him and this is great for this players becasue it frees them from being constantly in the media spotlight and they can play with less pressure. People in England seem to forget that Argentina hasn't gotten past the quarterfinals in the last 4 world cups and theur 4 previous coaches were great professionals. Therefore, if Argentina gets to the semifinals this time with Maradona as coach, it will be their best result in a world cup since 1990. I'm sure Argentina will go far, Maradona is a great incentive for them because he understands better than anyone what a world cup means and how to deal with the pressure. It's a tremendous asset for his players. A world cup is not about playing well: it's just about winning! It the world cup would only be about playing well, Italy and Germany wouldn't have 7 world cup wins and Holland would have a couple of word cup trophies under its belt. Some teams don't play well but they know how to compete in a world cupa (Germany and Italy in every single tournament, Argentina in 1990 when they reached the final, Brazil when they won the trophy in 1994 and 2002, France in 2006 when they reached the final). I wouldn't discard Argentina and I think that all those who trash Maradona as a coach are missing the point completely.

AW, I completely agree with you. Maradona is too Loud. Lest we forget, the last major International that Maradona played was Against Nigeria. You all will remember that his drug palavar was exposed after that encounter. What will he do this time as a coach? May God help Nigeria more than He did in that Maradona led victory.

  25. let's cross our fingers and enjoy the world cup
it has always been a surprise tournament
so we should not cross out that from happening in South Africa
    2 + 2 is not 4 in the pitch.
so fasten your seat belt and get ready for a wave of surprise and shock
as your favorite team on paper
    fall of the wagon.

  30. Arsene Whinger is one to talk about media hype! And how can any coach be too closely connected to the team. Isn't that suposed to be the point of good coaching (and speaking the same language helps!)
