An interview, with Chuck Lai, master Doom TC creator.

(Chuck Lai 02/25/03)

Thought you might like to know...

To Quote my friend Sean Ryan whenever he made fun of me and Doom... "Doom is not dead, Doom is life."

The same could be said at this moment right now. Please read all of this...

The contraversal Doom 2 addon returns.

What he's back? Yes he is, I hear people are looking for me... here I am.

I'm sure you all have some questions that I would like to answer right now in this forum. Let me cover some basics questions you might be thinking.

What is this?

Doom2X was an addon using really only weapon tweaks and enemy A.I. changes, how they acted, speed, reaction time, and everything about their abilities was sped up to give a fast-based adrenalin pumping version of Doom2. It was published in the September 1996 issue of PC Gamer, a memorable issue indeed as this issue contained the Quake 1 demo which was a big step in the First Person Shooter...

Ultra Doom2X was basically a bug fix version of Doom2X, there were some things in Doom2X I didn't like, some issues that need ironing out, and I managed to make my own map for the first time which is MAP32 in Ultra Doom2X... I also had a basic story as a villian I wrote about in High School I breathed life into my Doom games, known as Comtar... a basic cyber-punk version of Hellraiser's Pinhead... a person who saught powerful magics through mind amplification technology...

Doom2X-treme was also another bump up from Ultra Doom2X... This addon featured 32 new levels, after making my first level I realised how difficult making a map is, at this time in the world of PC Gaming, there was no Mod Teams (and if there were there were very few), and no clans, and no mp3s, and I was chatting away in AOL version 3... wow... seems so long ago doesn't it? So... I went and saught out the best 32 levels around made by anyone and everyone. I got permission from people making levels, even for their own projects, with the pitch that this was a BEST OF using my Doom2X engine.

The Doom2X engine at the birth of Doom2X-treme had things never before seen that now I'm sure we see all the time. Guns shot new projectiles, the Cyber-demon and only the cyber-demon could kill you even in God Mode, allowing a chance of risk in battle from only this foe. Doom2X-treme had two guns and the "Railgun" which Quake 2 and Shadow Warrior soon would mimic later... yes folks I thought of it first... a flame thrower with limited range... and I had many of e-mails insisting the Quake 2 chaingun was almost as fast and powerful as mine.

Doom2X-treme Gold was a true sequel to Doom2X-treme as far as story goes, dealing with a girl character in a futuristic setting where it was magic versus technology. There was also new weapons like a sword with limited range that also could be the only weapon to kill Comtar. I also had a true last boss that wasn't a wall, a last one on one match with a fast moveable Comtar.

But there was a problem with all of this...

What was the problem?

Doom2X-treme had a few levels not legal to the Doom community at that time, actually honestly... only one level. Level 31... which was all four Doom 1 levels back to back and linked together with hundreds more enemies then before creating a mix of chaos. Of most of the problems my series would face, Doom2X-treme had it easy...

Doom2X-treme GOLD however is much different. I blame myself falling into hype and excited over hundreds of e-mails a week asking for new game and thus rushed out Doom2X-treme GOLD, (hey when your 18 and popular online lets see what crazy shit you do) while I got permission for the girl sprites and found a freeware weapons site in a Doom tutorial book, I used some levels from Final Doom and sprites from Hexen and Strife.

In all honesty I kept Doom2X-treme GOLD with the same theme... a BEST OF... where I did pick a new set of 32 wonderful levels, also enhancing my original Ultra Doom2X level to my current Doom knowledge. But I did it to fast to realize how stupid some aspects of it were and how I should have gotten more permissions on some of the levels.

What you have illegal material?

Yes, I've seen the posts in here who think my Doom is crap cause of it... believe me when I say it's not about the levels as it is the experience. Hate me all you want for using levels you may have played before as far as Doom2X-treme GOLD goes, but Doom2X-treme is with permission except level 31... That game is going to be left alone because of current legal statuses reguarding Doom levels.

Doom2X-treme GOLD is the main object of fixing and tweaking. While I know other mods use Hexen, Strife, Duke Nukem, Counter Strike, Sin, and what ever other First Person shooter you can think of... and no one cares. Why? It's old. Shoot people are hacking the Doom64 cartridge to obtain sprites and textures out of that and Nintendo doesn't seem care...

So what am I doing about it?

As of this moment right now... none of my Doom2X wads are illegal using other examples I've seen. In all essence, I don't have to fix my wads at all... I don't have to change anything. But I am doing this to make Doom2X-treme GOLD the way it was meant to be, what it should have been. Believe me when I say, there is an unrealised half way done fix for Doom2X-treme GOLD that was also meant to run with Doom Legacy and JDoom... But there are no levels...

Also I am going to update the first two Addons; Ultra Doom2X and Doom2X-treme, with the same Legacy and JDoom fixes needed to run, DEH files and everything... since I distributed the wads with new EXEs for people who didn't know how to use or add or combine a DEH file... well, hopefully you know how to by now.

Can I help?

If your a certain harrassing banned member of the NewDoom forums... NO!

If your a cool guy... YES! Surely there must be 32 or less really cool levels that are out there after 6 years! I am out of the Doom loop, I don't know what cool levels are out there anymore... I would apprechiate level suggestions of what you think would make a good new BEST OF for Doom2X-treme GOLD. If you yourself are making high profile Doom TC wads, and you have this one level you think is one of the best, let me know! I'd love to have it in a collection of 32 new levels for a fixed Doom2X-treme GOLD using my tweaks I made would probably make your level alot more exciting so why miss out on seeing if it can!

Like I said, if you know of a really awesome large, or insanely detailed and beautiful level... suggest it, I'd love to see it. I would be happy for any help you could offer me. Honestly, I need the help, I've always been one guy doing this alone, and I've always had this dream of the ultimate, difficult, Doom game. There were thousands of Doom levels in 1997, I can't imagine the numbers of levels now.

If you have any other questions or comments, please feel free to ask and reply here. Let your other Doom friends know... Comtar is back.

Dare to be X-treme...

It is only my opinion, but, if I had to name the guy I most respect as far as wad design, it could be no other than Mike Reed. This guy has skills, in both architecture and texture design that rival the Masters at ID themselves. Please visit Mike's web site and take a look at his stuff.

    DOOM

ETERNITY by Bjorn Hermans & Holger Nathrath
SERENITY II aka ETERNITY (v1.1) A full replacement for the second episode of Doom (which means there are 8 levels - sorry, no bonus level in this one, but you won't miss it...). In the months after the release of SERENITY, we have been working hard to come up with a worthy successor for it. ETERNITY has the same look & feel as SERENITY has. In ETERNITY you won't have to puzzle as much, but for that more time has been put in the design of the levels. We also think that ETERNITY is slighty harder to play than SERENITY, but it is still doable to play it at "Hurt me plenty" without cheating.

You were knocked unconcious... minutes later, you got out from the compartment and tried to find your pals. "Where are they ?" "Where are inhabitants of this complex?" THE UNHOLY TRINITY by Steve McCrea, Simon Wall, & Elias Papavassilopoulos
A reasonable representation of Trinity College, Cambridge. "Oh no, not again," I hear you cry. "Some lamers' first WAD. Prob'ly got a cyber in there." But wait! Read on. Much cannon fodder. Many new graphics. Cool bits. Guaranteed entertainment or your money back (see below for terms and conditions of this offer). And NO cyberdemon! Well... oh, never mind. Although designed for single player, has multiplayer weapons and starts, and large, well interconnected areas.

    GALAXIA by Pavel Hodek
When I finished the level after several weeks, I didn't want to have just a few soldiers. So, this is gonna be tough. No Cyberdemon, but several spiders. But wait! The one in the first room is here just for the story and will be killed later. All other spiders are only decorations and won't be killed. A few cacos and barons. (total: over 330 enemies) You will be given all weapons except the BFG. Don't believe in invulnerability. (It sucks). There are no traps or places where you would stuck. No puzzles, just an instant and hard action. Hey, this is DOOM! My plan was to design an original subway area and sewers.

As you gather your senses, you look around to see that you are in a small courtyard. You can see the exit, it is only a few yards away. You move towards the door only to find that there is some type of a force field preventing you from getting there. There must be some way out! You find the subterrainian passage. You make your way down deeper, deeper into the heart of the complex. You discover all the secrets that it holds. You find the Pyramid Chamber and climb to the top and grab the exit key card. You have fought in the Arena of Death and survived! You pick up your ticket and relax at the Double Feature Cinema just as the curtain goes up. It is an adult movie but you get in easily and sit front row center. You make it back to the surface and fresh air. You have by-passed the force field, you insert the keycard into the exit door, YES, the door opens, you run in and see the switch on the far wall. As you reach for the switch you feel something burning on the back of your neck, should you turn around or press the switch? You start to turn and ...

SATAN'S HELL HOLE aka CHEESE by Matt "dabug" Hooper
This is my third and what I think is my best Wad. Plenty of graphics changes as well as a nice layout for all modes. Single or Multi Player. The other Wads I've done were made with only single players in mind. I've taken the time to add all the things I like in a good Deathmatch Wad as well as keeping it interesting for single players. You'll find lots of windows, hiding places, and fair deathmatch starts. I recommend Deathmatch with no monsters. When I first tested it in Deathmatch mode I feared the size(Huge) would make Deathmatch frustrating but it worked out fine. We averaged about a Frag every 1.5 mins to 2 mins which isn't bad There is an aggrevating transporter puzzle which will frustrate many. If you use your mind(it's a terrible thing to waste) it can be easily solved. Or just keep transporting until you see the transporter with the Blue Armor. I finished the Level with no problems in about 21 mins. Of course it's not going to be nearly that easy for you because I made it. Use the save early and often. Well enjoy the Wad and send comments so I can make better Wads in the future.

BLOOD ON THE WALZ by Tom Walz
This is the first release of a few levels that I have done for Doom. They take place in levels 1 through 5 on mission 1. They were created in the order that they are played in, so the first level seems less well rounded but level 4 has some excellent design. These levels took me a long time to create (learning Deu and thinking of new mechanics.) I plan to release newer versions later with more levels, better graphics, and I'll brush up the early levels even more. There are some graphics included in this version (mostly textures for my house) but most of the stuff is the same. The levels are set up so that if you choose medium difficulty, it should be perfect for those who need a challange. Easy is well ... pretty easy. And Hard is not impossible (I've completed it often, but I know where everything is) but it is difficult. In order to get the best value out of these levels I suggest you DO NOT USE ANY CHEAT CODES. If it seems to difficult at first, change the difficulty level, and don't spoil the secrets. I have worked hard to get the difficulty where I wanted it for these levels.

NUKE MINE (Come Get Some) by Jason Hargreaves
It appears that there has been an incident on Nexus 14. Nexus 14 is a mining planet, which basically means its a rock floating in some shitty solar system. Nexus 14 is known across the universe for its rich content of Nuke, a green substance that makes a great meat spread, paint thinner or extra firm hair gel. Anyways, the last report from the Nexus 14 communications centre warned of an attack from creatures released through a time-continuem breach (sorry if that's spelled wrong). You have been ordered to go in as survelance only. You are to assess the situation and be out in two hours to report to your commanding officer so that preparations can be made for a counter assault. The only problem is, you think your tough enough to take on the army of creatures yourself. You stupid twit! What makes you think that one person could possibly drive off an entire army of blood sucking demons from Dimension-X? Fine then, go ahead...

    POLYGON by Rick Lipsey
I hate poison pits, areas so dark you can't see anything, and that stupid strobe light effect Also, wads so over-stuffed that your computer locks up when you try to save the game, what a stupid thing to do! And use a reject map builder, please. Over 6 months in construction, I spent about a kabillion hours just making it look good. Big, about 800 sectors, but this level is meant to be fun, not to give you headaches. Please send any feedback to either of the above e-mail addresses, I'd love to hear from you. A totally non-linear level, other than needing all three keys to exit, you're free to go anywhere you want. Play on HMP for a Doom-like experience, UV adds the Doom 2 monsters, NTR is real easy. OSIRIS Total Conversion is the much-expanded sequel to I, ANUBIS (a DOOMGATE "Best Doom2 of all time" level). OSIRIS makes that one look like pac-man. OSIRIS contains incredible new monsters, textures, graphics, and sounds (326 new sprites!). Loosely (very loosely) based on the movie "STARGATE". Designed to be DIFFICULT, with serious thought applied to gameplay, lighting, architecture, immersion, and theme. Gameplay will be best on ULTRAVIOLENT in single-player or co-op modes. Provision for deathmatch is not included. OSIRIS is NOT so huge as to slow your machine to a crawl, but faster machines will, of course, play better. OSIRIS is a totally immersive experience. ALIENS TC by Justin Fisher
The Story so far... LB4-26. The terraforming colony has stopped transmitting or responding. There is a possibility that this is the result of an unknown parasitic alien species. Against this possibility, a military force has been mobilised to investigate. This information comes from Flight Officer Ripley, she claims the Nostramos set down on LB 4-26 in order to investigate a transmission, an unidentified alien ship was discovered. While exploring the ship, a crew member was disabled by an alien parasite, which deposited an egg inside him before dying. He became host to an embryo and was killed as it exited his body. The alien quickly grew and began to attack crew, usually capturing them, we assume for food. Flight Officer Ripley was the only survivor, she destroyed the xenomorph by opening an airlock when the alien was inside. According to Officer Ripley, the original parasite came from a large "egg", and that there were thousands of such eggs in the hold of the alien vessel. If this is correct, and members of the colony found the alien ship, there may be hostile alien activity in or around the colony. Your job is to find out why the colony has stopped responding, and if a xenomorph is involved, destroy it. [Classified] Ensure that live samples are secured for laboratory study.
