Remember during Hurricane Katrina when hundreds of dogs, cats, and other pets owned by New Orleans residents were abandoned by their families who had nowhere safe to leave them? Or the hundreds that were brought to animal shelters with hopes that someday their owners would be able to come back and reclaim them? Tragic as it seemed at the time, that catastrophic event helped draw attention to the fact that animal-control facilities in municipalities across the United States ought to put together disaster plans so they can respond to that kind of crisis without the kind of chaos that ensued in New Orleans. Baltimore City Animal Control is now in the process of planning its own disaster proposal, called the City Animal Response Team, and it's actively looking for volunteers willing to donate their time to the effort. Volunteers will be trained in emergency-preparedness, and during an emergency (should one arise) will be called upon to help handle, process, and rescue animals in danger. If you're an animal lover and you're interested in helping out, e-mail Alexis Mitchell at BaltimoreCART@gmail.com [more]
