Um... according to Wikipedia his birthday is July 30... not today, June 30.

Sorry to rain on your parade... but keep that thought. We'll have a party in a month :)

Jumphi97 [S] 406 points407 points 2 days ago[-]

oh yeah like I'm stupid enough to make that mist.... fuck

Freezerburn 186 points187 points 2 days ago[-]

I'm going to up vote this in hopes that everyone sees your mistake.

Yawprrr 69 points70 points 2 days ago[-]

Next month everyone is going to be downvoting because they think it's a repost.

Samophlange 8 points9 points 2 days ago[-]

MrOhHai will have a goddamn field day - he now has around a month to prepare the most malicious, insulting repost tirade that he can.

MerryEllen 1 point2 points 2 days ago[-]

It will be a repost. Will it not?

khamul 13 points14 points 2 days ago[-]

It'll be like JamesRilstone not being able to get out of Kokiri Forest all over again!

colusaboy 6 points7 points 2 days ago[-]

I'm gonna upvote so we can enjoy your mistake AND to let you know you've got great "taste" in a food sensei. Thanks for the laugh and hoo-ray for Alton Brown.

RockmanX 0 points1 point 2 days ago[-]

Heh. When this gets to frontpage the first three comments on this thread will be upvoted to oblivion and everything after it will only get a smattering of approval.

DrunkAndAngry 42 points43 points 2 days ago[-]

you could always go in and change the wikipedia article

duplico 2 points3 points 2 days ago[-]

Not to throw gasoline on the fire, but there appears to be a bit of an edit war going on over his birthday...

Menace2Sobriety 24 points25 points 2 days ago* [-]

If I recall correctly someone on Reddit was a neighbor of his. We should try to figure out a birthday gift for him. We now have a month to plan. And if you're that neighbor redditor, let yourself be known I can't remember what thread it was in.

Edit: I started a thread asking for ideas here

headspace10 43 points44 points 2 days ago* [-]

Ahem, I may or may not work at Food Network... but no guarantees I have the clout to personally deliver a gift to Alton.

Edit: I will be watching this thread as well the one Menace2Sobriety set up. If this idea gains some steam I want to do all I can to help Reddit!

natalie813 6 points7 points 2 days ago[-]

Can you give this guy a job?

Menace2Sobriety 6 points7 points 2 days ago[-]

.....my god. This may actually happen.

detkie 0 points1 point 2 days ago[-]

Upvote simply for working at Food Network

pivotal 0 points1 point 2 days ago[-]

AMA? (also giving Alton a gift would be rad)

Targetdoz 1 point2 points 2 days ago[-]

But AMA, get to it

origin415 0 points1 point 2 days ago[-]

What we really need is an Alton Brown AMA.

pleaserock 6 points7 points 2 days ago[-]

I can guarantee a delivery to Alton Brown. I've worked for him a number of times, my father does all of his photography, he shot the thumb for this post. Let me help!

PaeTar 1 point2 points 2 days ago[-]

Can you get him to come do an AMA?

pleaserock 0 points1 point 1 day ago[-]

It seems like it would be more tactful to give him a give for his birthday, then in the note expressing our undying adoration for him that accompanies the gift, we give him a list of Q's and ask him to answer them. Eh?

kaett 7 points8 points 2 days ago[-]

i could crochet him some new sock-puppet yeasties.

Menace2Sobriety 0 points1 point 2 days ago[-]

What are those exactly?

Targetdoz 2 points3 points 2 days ago[-]

I would be game

Menace2Sobriety 1 point2 points 2 days ago[-]

Me too, now we just gotta track down the redditor that was his neighbor.

spewerOfRandomBS 1 point2 points 2 days ago[-]

...would it help to contact his press secretary?..

cjhelms -1 points0 points 2 days ago[-]

Don't worry I'm upvoting it so hopefully it will stay on the front page for a month when it will be true :)

Jumphi97 [S] 0 points1 point 2 days ago[-]

Its ok I think I'll just put it up again and call it his real birthday

giveitago 5 points6 points 2 days ago[-]

It's funny that you checked.

wizpig64 1 point2 points 2 days ago[-]

Someone's editing wikipedia to screw with us sadly :(

TheContrarian2 25 points26 points 2 days ago[-]

He's a nice guy also. I homeschool my kids and wrote him a letter telling him that I use his shows for my 'home ec and cooking classes' and thanked him for the great show. A few days later, I got an autographed book in the mail along with a picture of him holding a fish, which was also signed.

Just a nice guy.

ACSlater 3 points4 points 2 days ago[-]

heh the parent and children comments right above are all about what a dick he is. I want to believe you more!

starkinter 3 points4 points 2 days ago[-]

Haha, he signed a fish.

IanMcKellen 3 points4 points 2 days ago[-]

Orrrr a PA did it.

potatogun 1 point2 points 2 days ago[-]

IanMcKellen 0 points1 point 1 day ago[-]

The very same one.

MogusMaximus 1 point2 points 2 days ago[-]

zazz -3 points-2 points 2 days ago[-]

Homeschooling your kids is either a wise choice, based on your circumstances, or one of the worst things you're doing for your children. Having a TV show teach your kids, even if it is a good show, doesn't help support the former :(

murdurturtle 100 points101 points 2 days ago[-]

Mr. Brown should have two birthdays for being so fucking awesome.

Loovian 69 points70 points 2 days ago[-]

You fool! Now he is cursed to forever age twice as fast!

TheSighGuy 32 points33 points 2 days ago[-]

Quick! Somebody paint a picture of him!

thenationalpress 8 points9 points 2 days ago[-]

bobby_badass 2 points3 points 2 days ago[-]

But live twice as long!

Blakestra 17 points18 points 2 days ago[-]

I can get behind that. I've heard that his background was in film/TV and when he got tired of seeing cooking shows that looked like shit, he conceived an idea for a cooking show that didn't. He then went to culinary school so that he could eventually make said show. Pretty BA if you ask me/if indeed true.

dakboy 16 points17 points 2 days ago[-]

BA is AB's evil twin brother. Don't you watch the show at all?

headspace10 7 points8 points 2 days ago[-]

He also formed his own production company for the show... one he still uses to this day.

mechanate 5 points6 points 2 days ago[-]

Yep. A true example of a person following their dream despite incredible risk, and enjoying great success. I also admire his wife, who gave up the fairly comfortable lifestyle they enjoyed so he could return to school.

JacobBovatsek 2 points3 points 2 days ago[-]

He wrote a good bit about it in "Good Eats: The Early Years", next time you're in a book store check it out, or the excerpt might be on the internets somewhere.

Its over on my shelf, but thats at least 4 steps away so...IIRC, he was in marketing (commercials and whatnot) and got the idea for the show. He says he was originally just going to be a writer and have a pretty-boy do the cooking. So he went to culinary school and come pilot time he didn't have enough money to hire anyone so it ended up being him in his friend's kitchen. Its hard to tell when hes just being modest, though.

improbablywrong 1 point2 points 2 days ago[-]

A.B. redefined B.A.

sjlurker 2 points3 points 2 days ago[-]

Now he does.

thelastbaron 48 points49 points 2 days ago[-]

He's like the Bill Nye of food. I love Good Eats.

Gravity13 5 points6 points 2 days ago[-]

If you want to go further into the actual science of food and cooking, On Food and Cooking by Harold McGee is where Alton gets most of his information from.

In other words, Bill Nye is to Einstein, what Alton Brown is to Harold McGee.

Mis-shapes -4 points-3 points 2 days ago[-]

Bill Nye... the science guy, BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL BILL, Bill Nye the science guy!

Tornadith 10 points11 points 2 days ago[-]

Well then, happy birthday to me instead!

trollmaster5000 3 points4 points 2 days ago[-]

Well then happy birthday to you, you awful fucker.

blanketsmellslikeham 9 points10 points 2 days ago[-]

I worked on Good Eats for years..I can drop a gift off.

kirkt 5 points6 points 2 days ago[-]

Alton truly changed the way I cook and started me down the path to truly understanding what happens to food while we manipulate it in the kitchen. I really appreciate what he's done even if it's not his birthday.

zorbix 15 points16 points 2 days ago[-]

Umm..who is this? I really haven't seen him before. Searching for Mr.Brown took me to some Singaporean blogger's site.

thelastbaron 12 points13 points 2 days ago[-]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alton_brown

He's best known for hosting several cooking shows which are very educational and entertaining. He doesn't just show you how to cook something, he's super smart and his main show, Good Eats, also goes into the history and science of whatever he's preparing.

tubeguy 5 points6 points 2 days ago[-]

Is he the guy that talks to you with those weird camera angles like you're in the oven?

Roland_Deschain 3 points4 points 2 days ago[-]

Yes.

Psythik 3 points4 points 2 days ago[-]

Glad I'm not the only one.

greggerypeccary 0 points1 point 2 days ago[-]

Never heard of the guy either, but I recognized him from commercials he did for Welch's grape juice. My first thought is why the hell does reddit care about some 2-bit actor from a juice ad?

aduric 2 points3 points 2 days ago[-]

I thought it was Tarantino's character from Reservoir Dogs.

evanvolm 1 point2 points 2 days ago[-]

Mr. Brown: [after Joe assigns names] Yeah, yeah, but "Mr. Brown"? That's little too close to "Mr. Shit".

Mr. Pink: Yeah, "Mr. Pink" sounds like "Mr. Pussy". Tell you what, let me be Mr. Purple. That sounds good to me. I'm Mr. Purple.

Joe: You're not Mr. Purple. Somebody from another job's Mr. Purple. You're Mr. Pink!

TakeItToTwitter 22 points23 points 2 days ago[-]

We get it: there's a celebrity that you like.

Why not share something of substance about him instead of a bland exclamation?

BowlingNight 10 points11 points 2 days ago[-]

I don't care if it isn't his birthday, this seems like a perfect time to gain awareness of a huge collection of Good Eats episodes located here.

Diabolus_Advocatus 11 points12 points 2 days ago[-]

Sandra Lee is the Sarah Palin of cooking.

McKlip -2 points-1 points 2 days ago[-]

Because she's an attractive, middle-aged woman?

lovesmasher 20 points21 points 2 days ago[-]

Because she's an idiot who would probably wander off camera if they weren't waiting with tasers.

Knute5 0 points1 point 2 days ago[-]

Oh c'mon, she's alright. Plus, who else ends her show with liquor and a "tablescape"?

mhertel 3 points4 points 2 days ago[-]

When I see her tablescapes, I question her sanity. Then I see that she really enjoys alcohol and I suppose that kind of explains things. She is just drunk all the time.

McKlip -1 points0 points 2 days ago[-]

Ah, jealousy is a wonderful thing, isn't it.

lovesmasher 5 points6 points 2 days ago[-]

There's a huge difference between revulsion and jealousy.

SomeKindOfOctopus 0 points1 point 2 days ago[-]

sharked 26 points27 points 2 days ago[-]

I've met this guy before. He was an asshole.

schleppy 20 points21 points 2 days ago[-]

Explain?

sharked 39 points40 points 2 days ago[-]

I did some work with him. They were shooting a promo for his book. He treated everyone on set like an asshole. He acted like a diva the whole time. He threw a hissy fit because his bottled water was the wrong brand. He called a young PA a "bitch" because she refused to give him a hug.

Like I said, an asshole.

gysterz 43 points44 points 2 days ago[-]

Nice try Anthony Bourdain!

sharked 9 points10 points 2 days ago[-]

I've met him too. He was awesome. :)

NELyon 10 points11 points 2 days ago[-]

So Alton Brown is a dick but Anthony Bourdain is cool?

...I can live with this.

ACSlater 5 points6 points 2 days ago[-]

I can't. I would have staked all my money on the exact opposite. For some reason I feel like if I met Bourdain on the street he would just shrung off some pompous "yeah how you doing" and keep walking. I sort figured Alton Brown would be a little more friendly and wacky.

NELyon 2 points3 points 2 days ago[-]

I dunno, I feel like the people that act pompous and jerk-ish on TV are alot of the time more down-to-Earth and nice than the ones that seem like they'd be nice. I don't know, my mind is weird.

potatogun 5 points6 points 2 days ago[-]

Then what about Bobby Flay!?! I always assumed he was an asshole.

Demonithese 9 points10 points 2 days ago[-]

his show where he surprises people is the worst. Those small-time people who put everything they have into making something, and they get so excited when they think food network wants to do a SHOW about THEM, and then fucking bobby flay comes out and lays some smackdown -- with all those people there its not like they can refuse. I want him everytime he hops out of the bushes or whatever to yell "SURPRISE ASSHOLE! IM BOBBY FLAY"

chigonzo 15 points16 points 2 days ago[-]

I worked with him recently (The Next Iron Chef) and he was hilarious and personable the whole time. He was a great host to work with because of his TV background. He didn't rely on the AD to keep the day rolling, he was perfectly capable of staying on track and making sure the rest of the cast did as well. Stellar dude.

sharked 0 points1 point 2 days ago[-]

I agree, he was a professional once the camera was rolling and he had to get to work.

CylonbutDeadly 1 point2 points 2 days ago[-]

I am so jealous of all the people in here who work with the Food Network! How fun!

peaceisoverrated 17 points18 points 2 days ago[-]

She refused to give him a hug?? What a bitch.

corpus_callosum 19 points20 points 2 days ago[-]

I find that hard to believe. On his Feasting on Asphalt series, he seemed like such a genuinely nice guy. He'd have to be almost sociopathic for all that to be phony.

stausty 6 points7 points 2 days ago[-]

He's one of those people that's nice to you at dinner but a dick to the waiter.

ChristheGreek 2 points3 points 2 days ago[-]

Ted Bundy seemed genuinely nice as well.

CiXeL -1 points0 points 2 days ago[-]

gysterz 1 point2 points 2 days ago[-]

DAM KIDS GET OFF MY LEMONGRASS!!!

b0jangl3s 20 points21 points 2 days ago[-]

I am going to choose to believe that he was having a bad day. Please allow me to live in denial :(

dakboy 9 points10 points 2 days ago[-]

It flies in the face of everything else I've heard about him.

theregistereddood 6 points7 points 2 days ago[-]

Everything you read on the internet is true. Even if it some random person on reddit who has no verification or honesty and you have no clue of their background. One anecdote from a single day or even period of life also completely describes a person's character on all days.

wiltedbouquet 1 point2 points 2 days ago[-]

Everything you read on the internet is true.

Including this statement? I think my head is about to explode.

ztherion 1 point2 points 2 days ago[-]

This statement makes perfect sense if it is true. It can also be a lie.

You're thinking of "Nothing you read on the Internet is true." (Which is still technically not a paradox, because Some things on the Internet are true.)

DoTheEvolution 5 points6 points 2 days ago[-]

troll... wrong brand of water? nothing more original?

mechanate 8 points9 points 2 days ago[-]

This is rather disappointing to hear, but I guess that's why you should never meet the people you really admire.

bonesplinters 17 points18 points 2 days ago[-]

Yeah, it's not possible someone on the internet with an anecdote is full of shit, no siree.

willies_hat 2 points3 points 2 days ago[-]

Upvoted because he's a fellow NECI grad and every alum I've met that knew him said exactly the same thing.

FWIW I am still a fan of IC and GE.

CiXeL 3 points4 points 2 days ago[-]

It comes off in his programming. His success went to his head. He thinks he's God's gift to the world now.

Apocrathia 2 points3 points 2 days ago[-]

Go toe-to-toe with Alton Brown on food knowledge. I DARE YOU

zickx009 0 points1 point 2 days ago[-]

Jesus, I can't downvote this enough. Seriously, people? A thread, completely lacking substance or entertainment value of any kind, pointing out (incorrectly) that it's some mildly famous person's birthday, gets to the top of reddit?

At the very least, couldn't you have submitted this to a subreddit where a significant percentage of people actually know who this guy is and watch his show?

You people fucking suck.

borednahurry -2 points-1 points 2 days ago[-]

meh

DoctorFaustus -1 points0 points 2 days ago[-]

MrSnoobs -1 points0 points 2 days ago[-]

I've only just discovered Good Eats (I don't know if we get it over here in the UK). Love it. Great stuff. My only complaint is that they/he never goes in to the ethics of food production (I'm in season 2 so he may later on) which I find somewhat annoying. Sure, he recommends that you buy freerange eggs and organically reared meat but why? People need to know why NOT to buy battery farmed eggs and indoor reared corn fed cattle. Still, definitely Good eats...

tiny_mars_humans -2 points-1 points 2 days ago[-]

I am reading this, in my underwear only, just woke up and I look at the Polish sausage + two slices of bread (as the bun) that I have been scarfing down (about 80% finished) and realize I have just eaten two slices of bread covered in a pretty nice amount of green and grey mold. SHIT.
