Ford tops Canadian sales -- again

Canadians seem to really love Ford cars. For the first time in over half a century, the Ford Motor Company of Canada has been the country’s top-selling automaker for two consecutive fiscal quarters.

On Friday, the company announced a 16% increase in sales over the month of June, marking Ford’s highest monthly sales since May 2000. The automaker finished the first half of 2010 with an overall 23% rise in sales.

“Any increase for Ford of Canada this month is significant when you consider that we are comparing this June’s sales to an unprecedented month this time last year,” David Mondragon, Ford of Canada’s chief executive, said in a statement.

“Customers are rewarding Ford for delivering new products they want. That’s why our business is growing.”

Every model of Ford cars, trucks and SUVs saw an increase in sales over the month of June. Most significant was the Taurus family sedan, which experienced a whopping 145% increase in sales. The Ford Explorer also experienced a boom in popularity, with a 79% rise in sales of the company’s flagship sport utility vehicle.

According to the RVI Used Car Price Index, the average resale price of used Ford vehicles in Canada rose 28% over the past 18 months, which Ford said translates to an average increase of $2,196 per car. The increase was “more than double the industry average for the same period,” the company said.
