Building a vibrant field of sexuality requires creating and nurturing networks that connect the wide range of scholars, students, educators, activists, and practitioners who work on sexuality issues. Network building within the field of sexuality is particularly challenging since sexuality is not a defined discipline and remains a controversial topic within many professions. Researchers, educators, activists, and practitioners may downplay sexuality-related work in order to avoid jeopardizing their career trajectories. The historic result has been the isolation of sexuality researchers, educators and students, a disconnect between policy research and advocacy, and the lack of representation for people of color in the field.
