RSL's Saborío earns MLS Player of the Week, again
Forward nets brace in 5-0 pounding of New England
Real Salt Lake are enjoying a stunning run of form, and so is their leading scorer, Alvaro Saborío.
Saborío tallied a brace in RSL's 5-0 thumping of New England on Friday. The goals earned him the MLS Player of the Week award for Week 14, as voted on Monday by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR).
The Costa Rican international, who is on loan from Swiss side FC Sion, added RSL's third goal early in the second half at Rio Tinto Stadium. Having stepped in front of his marker in the six-yard box, Saborío pounced onto Robbie Russell's perfectly placed ball from the right wing. With his first touch, he poked the ball past goalkeeper Matt Reis [WATCH: Saborío makes it 3-0].
However, it was his second goal—and RSL's fourth—that will be a likely contender for Goal of the Week.
The move once again started from the right as Javier Morales fired in a hard, driven pass from the flank. Saborío was in traffic just inside the six-yard box, and with a cheeky backheel he steered the ball into the net [WATCH: Saborío's backheel].
“It was a great pass from Javier [Morales], and I only had to flick it on goal," said Saborío, who now has seven goals in league play this season. "It was no fluke.”
Saborío could have had a hat trick, too, but his effort late in the first half was ruled offside [WATCH: Saborío offside?].
With the win, the Claret-and-Cobalt are now unbeaten in nine straight MLS matches.
This is Saborío's second career MLS Player of the Week award. The 28-year-old first won the honor in Week 8 of this season after scoring twice in a May 13 defeat of the Houston Dynamo. Saborío went on to collect the Player of the Month award for May.
