Prince throughout the years - timeline of the music legend's career

1958, June 7 – Prince Rogers Nelson born in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

1976 – After forming bands at High School his demo tape inpresses three major labels. Signs a three-record $1million contract with Warner Bros.

1978 – First album For You makes little impression.

1979 – The album Prince sees single I Wanna Be Your Lover reach No11 in US charts.

1980 – Dirty Talk causes a stir with its sexual lyrics.

1982 – Prince makes worldwide breakthrough with album 1999. Hits include Little Red Corvette and title track.

1984 – Purple Rain sells 13 million in the US alone. Spawns successful film and mega singles including When Doves Cry and Let’s Go Crazy. At one point Prince has the No1 album, single and film in the US.

1986 – Starts building $10million Paisley Park Studios in Minneapolis.

1988 – Critics rave about his tour for album Lovesexy but ticket sales are down. It is his last US tour.

1989 – Writes the Batman soundtrack album and US sales rise to two million.

1991 – Diamonds and Pearls is has five million sales worldwide.

1992 – Prince announces he has signed a $100million deal with Warner Bros, a figure downplayed by the label.

1993 – Celebrates his 35th birthday by changing his name to a symbol and asks to be known as the Artist formerly known as Prince.

1995 – Starts scrawling SLAVE on his face to protest at being held to his contract with Warner Bros. After being released from his contract he releases 10 discs worth of material.

1996 – Marries girlfriend of six years, Mayte Garcia, 24. Their baby son Gregory dies after seven days from a genetic skull condition.

1998 – The couple announce they will annul their marriage and be rejoined in a “symbolic” and “spiritual” ceremony on Valentine’s Day 1999.

2000 – Changes his name back to Prince splits from Mayte.

2001 – Becomes a Jehovah’s Witness and marries Manuela Testolini.

2004 – Opens the Grammy Awards with Beyonce, together performing Purple Rain. Announces he will tour album Musicology.

2006 – Performs at the Brit Awards in London. Testolini files for divorce.

2007 – Performs a record- breaking run of 21 concerts at London’s O2 arena.

2010 Saturday, July 10 – Releases his 33rd studio album 20TEN in the UK. The eagerly anticipated album is available free only in the Mirror.
