Mayor Nominates Turner For Atlanta Police Chief Job

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed has picked interim Atlanta Police Chief George Turner as the new chief of police.

Turner has been filling in as chief since the beginning of the year.

Turner is a 28-year veteran of the Atlanta Police Department and was the only in-house candidate among the three finalists.

Reed made the announcement at a news conference at 8 a.m.

Months ago, Turner reorganized the command levels at the department. Reed said since Turner took the interim job, violent crime in Atlanta is down 14 percent and property crime is down 12.3 percent.

The announcement comes seven months after former Chief Richard Pennington stepped down.

The city council must approve Reed's choice.
