Ratings: Rafters gives Seven clear win

Jul 14

Packed to the Rafters (Source: Publicity image, Seven)A dominant performance from Packed to the Rafters gave Seven a decisive win in the national ratings last night, with the popular comedy-drama increasing its audience compared to the same time last week.

The fourth episode of Packed to the Rafters obtained a metropolitan audience of 1.899 million viewers, according to overnight ratings from OzTAM. The programme has retained most of the audience who watched the season premiere, and came in second behind MasterChef Australia in each of the advertiser-friendly demographic groups.

Less successful for Seven was what came afterward: the channel had shunted its new series Australia Versus to a late timeslot after a disastrous beginning last week, but its replacement at 9:30pm, Ghost Whisperer, performed even more poorly, losing more than two-thirds of Rafters‘ viewers. Nevertheless, Seven and its 7TWO multichannel won the night with a combined share of 28.1 per cent.

Nine moved into outright second last night after tying with Ten last Tuesday, and had four of the top ten shows. Ten slipped to third on a national basis, but two of its most popular shows – MasterChef and Modern Family – continued to attract large audiences. MasterChef had an overnight audience of 1.927 million, while Modern Family again exceeded 1.5 million viewers at 8pm.

The ABC saw a slight uptick in its ratings compared to last week, thanks in part to a strong performance from Greatest Cities in the World. Last night’s episode moved up to eleventh place nationally, with an audience of 1.097 million. Around the World saw a clear increase in its ratings as well, moving up six places in the national ratings compared to last week.

Meanwhile, SBS‘s coverage of the Tour de France continued to give the broadcaster a boost. An average audience of 286,000 viewers watched the live evening coverage of the cycling event.
