Defenseman Darryl Sydor, a two-time Stanley Cup winner, retired on Tuesday and will join the coaching staff of the AHL's Houston Aeros, Minnesota's top farm team, as an assistant to new coach Mike Yeo.

Sydor, 38, played 18 seasons and 1,291 NHL games, including 47 with the St. Louis Blues in 2009-10. Sydor started his NHL career with Los Angeles, which picked him in the first round (No. 7) in the 1990 Entry Draft. He also played with Dallas, Columbus, Tampa Bay and Pittsburgh before finishing his career with St. Louis.

Sydor won Stanley Cups with Dallas in 1999 and Tampa Bay five years later, and went to the Final as recently as 2008, when he was a member of the Penguins. The Edmonton native finished his career with 98 goals and 507 points, including 8 assists for the Blues in '09-10. He added 9 goals and 56 points in 155 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

The Aeros also named Brian Wiseman as an assistant to Yeo. Wiseman led the Aeros to the IHL's Turner Cup championship in 1999 as a teammate of Yeo. He also played three NHL games with Toronto in 1996-97. Wiseman retired in 2000 due to concussion problems. He has served as an assistant coach at Princeton University and was a video coach with the Dallas Stars for one season.
