The Jets Stream

by Manish Mehta

Jets waive defensive tackle Simi Toeaina »

It's not exactly earth-shattering news, but the Jets made a transaction today by waiving defensive tackle Simi Toeaina. He played 21 games in four seasons at the University of Oregon before the Jets invited the undrafted rookie free agent to minicamp.

Training camp is right around the corner. Rookies report July 29 and will work out at the team's Florham Park, NJ, training facility before heading up to Cortland. Veterans report Aug. 1 for Rex Ryan's second training camp.

It appears this was a roster clearing move for a certain 39-year-old left-handed quarterback, who can't be signed until July 22.

I can’t believe they cut Simi. Woody signed him to generate PSL sales, I guess we are sold out……………All seriousness, they must be making roster space.

@Manish Mehta

Why do I feel the pursuit of the Jets to a Mark Brunell as pointless as their aborted pursuit of JaMarcus Russell? Is Kellen Clemens THAT bad? Is Erik Ainge not showing any potential at all that they evn have to consider a total bust like JamMarcus? And is Kevin O’Connell, a former 2nd round draft choice of the Pats destined to be just another body in camp to be released again? Mike Tannenbaum’s off season mpoves this year has been great so far, but Brunell?

What’s your honest take on this situation, please. Tell me my concerns are unfair and unjustified. That the Jets will not skip a beat with Brunell, not Clemens or Ainge, running the show should Sanchez goes down for a few games.

sorry for typos.

Mr. Grosshopper,

You didn’t ask me that question but if you did, my answer is this. I am sure countless hours were spent about the thought of acquiring Mark Brunell. Mike without doubt consulted the likes of Joey Clinkscale, Scott Cohen and of course, Rex Ryan. Unanimously, they felt that there is an urgent need to get Mark Brunnell. When that news become official July 22, just accept it peacefully. I am sure the rest of Jets Streamers will.

July 12, 2010 7:13 PM

@Loki.. you’re right I did not ask you the question. I doubt I will. But don’t think I am being unfriendly. I have a migraine that started at my workplace and I have the need to sleep after this post is submitted. A small talk before I go. You must be concerned about Lindsay Lohan being turned down for representation by high profile attorney Stuart V. Goldberg after being dumped by her previous one. She is a heck of a mess. Maybe a successful high profile attorney from Oceanside I am quite friendly with will take her case. Welcome to Jet Stream and goodnight.

Scottie> was Jets Stream boring during the early years? Certainly not during the past few years I have been here. Everyday seems to be a firework. Like the Looney tunes cartoons when I was growing up. So much strife and action but nobody ever gets killed.

Simi Toeaina is gone? I thought he’d certainly make it until Bastille Day. This is an outrage!!

How can they cut the Toe?? Forget about that 13-3 prediction.

He could have been the next Shane Burton or Lou Benfatti. What are we to do?

(though he probably IS better than D-Rob)

Dick, it was never boring, but the last year or so, everything seemed to magnify. You had old rogue in the early days with an obnoxious occasional post, and now days, he is correcting everyones grammar and posting obnoxious remarks like they are going out of style. We always had multi posters but today they are more creative. I dont think much has changed , it just became more intense. In any event, it is still a great blog and a lot of fun, as long as the invective dont go to an extreme. I am finally learning how to side step altercations. I don’t think I have it perfected yet, but I am getting there, lol.

As the season gets closer, a lot of the BS disappears as football talk will dominate and that is the way it should be. We all have a very exciting season coming up. It is what it is here and lets just be glad that no one has gotten killed. lol.

I will admit Rogue, you have been pretty good lately. My sincere apologies!

They feel Brunell would be a better “mentor” to Sanchez who has more NFL starts then the other three guys combined. A teacher, a sounding board. I’m willing to bet that if Mark got injured Ainge would be the next up even with Brunell on the roster.

July 13, 2010 7:28 AM

No Toeaina = no depth. no depth = fewer wins. fewer wins = scotts prediction scotts predictions = scotts happiness. scotts happiness = more amstel lights.

the bottom line No Toeaina = more Amstel lights

How about it scott, make sense??? lol

MikeD> Sounding like my old high school asst. principal. with that comparison. He had us getting killed in Viet Nam since without a pencil, we couldn’t take art.

July 13, 2010 7:58 AM

Fish, Probably but don’t rule out Smith. I think he is going to get worked into the QB rotation reps this summer more then before.I still don’t think they have to carry 3 QB’s plus Smith. Roster spots will be at a premium this year.

Should be interesting when the JETS cut one of the 3 back-up QBs where they will end up and if they play in the NFL.

Guido Bongiovi
July 13, 2010 8:26 AM

DT Simi Toeaina waived to get an old backup QB they will never use? I doubt it. How about getting an old OLB formerly from the Ravens who bombed in New England to have his career resurrected by Rex Ryan with the Jets? Adalius Thomas, released in April of this year is currently a free agent.

Scottie> your old buddy behaving nicely? Yesterday, he gave poster Loki, that new gay poster a hard time for not using the word homosexual. He implied Loki, a confirmed gay and a president of a gay organization , a homophobe. lol. Will somebody tell this old know-it-all that gays don’t call themselves homosexuals? They call themselves GAYs all the time.

Dickie, how would you know? Is that how you call each other, gay guys? Homosexual = Gay

Dick Myers
July 13, 2010 8:59 AM

Punk> that’s how I call you all the time. You and Bill Belle li chick are both gay homos. Dope…

July 13, 2010 9:06 AM

Ira, you’re probably right about the QB situation. Although Guido makes a good point about Thomas; We’ll know late next week.

July 13, 2010 9:16 AM

mike, It could be Thomas or maybe and i hope and would rather have Doulas back instead. Or maybe another kicker to give Folk some competition.

July 13, 2010 9:20 AM

I think we are going to see even more cuts in the days ahead, I find it hard to believe that Rex will not sign A. Thomas and another kicker for insurance purposes. As far as Brunell goes, as a mentor he does have a lot of experience, I just hope he’s not our #2 - is Ainge/O’Connell that shaky?

July 13, 2010 9:40 AM

All the hints and indications from the Jets are that we are going to pick up Brunell as soon as we are allowed . He will not omly be a capable backup but he will also be a good mentor not only to sanchez but also ainge. I think Ira is right that we wont carry four Qb’s but I think O’connell and Clemens will be the casualties. Guido I think we need to straighten out Revis, Mangold and Harris’s contracts before we would think about A.T. and ths only If he severely lowers his asking price.

July 13, 2010 9:42 AM

July 13, 2010 9:44 AM

Arcade I also agree with you about asecond kicker but we will have to wait for some of the competitions to shake out before any good ones will be available.

July 13, 2010 9:47 AM

Grasshopper — Rex Ryan really likes Brunell as a mentor for Sanchez. I think the Jets would be better off with Clemens despite his flaws. In the end, I think the QBs will be Sanchez, Brunell and Ainge. I’d be surprised if O’Connell is on the roster. He’s the odd man out, in my opinion.

We’ll see how it unfolds.

Manish,Clemens is to unsure of himself to be a good mentor or even backup Qb.If your eldist Qb isn’t confident in his own abilities how can he help the team. It doesn’t matter hw well he Knows the system. All that matters is how he performs on the field maybee he is a great practice player but it doesn’t translate to game day. He has had more than enough opportunities to prove himself and has always failed. Sometimes a team has to look past what a good soilder a player is an move on.

Manish, can you see if you can get the tech guys to get the Giants link off the Jetstream link.

Sure they do, but they don’t call themselves “non-heterosexuals” all the time, do they? And wasn’t THAT the point I made? Do you ever THINK before you post, Dick?

As far as your assertion the Loki is “a confirmed gay,” that was the broader point; I’m not so sure “Loki” is the person he says he is.

Arcade: “I think we are going to see even more cuts in the days ahead…”

Of course we’re going to see more cuts. The Jets are way over the 53 man roster size. They are currently showing about 80 players on their roster. Some may go on injured reserve, and a few on the practice squad, but a whole bunch are going to be pounding the pavement come September.

Old Rogue
July 13, 2010 12:15 PM

James Dearth, Marques Douglas, Ryan Omead Fowler, and Lawrence Alexander Izzo are all UFA and could also disappear sometime next week.

July 13, 2010 12:27 PM

Rogue - I know we are way over the roster, what I meant was we are going to see significant player cuts, not the no-hope JC guys that are on the roster now. Geez !
