KYLIE MINOGUE
Aphrodite (Parlaphone)
After the 2007 release, Kylie needed a hit album. And here it is. Aphrodite kicks off with the shimmering single All The Lovers, with its languid chorus and euphoric synth lines and kicks up another gear with the album's likely second single, Get Outta Here, a brutal dance-pop beast ridden with abandon by Kylie's frothy vocals. If Get Outta Here is a stone-cold future-pop classic, Put Your Hands Up (If You Feel Love) is a return to Kylie's pure-pop roots, lighter than air and the closest this joyous return to form comes to filler, while the luscious Everything Is Beautiful, written by Keane's Tim Rice-Oxley, is stirringly anthemic. Make no mistake - Kylie’s back. And how.

K'NAAN
Troubadour (A&M;)
Fresh from working with Keane on Night Train, rapper K'Naan explores the more melodic fringes of hip- hop on an articulate debut aimed squarely at the pop mainstream. Having escaped, as a child, from war-torn Somalia - 'the mother of rough neighbourhoods' - he is now based in North America, but wisely avoids any gangster rap cliches, instead incorporating rock influences and shining on World Cup anthem Wavin' Flag.

EMINEM
Recovery (Interscope)
With drugs and depression behind him, a newly sober Eminem recently topped the U.S. charts with a haunting ballad, Not Afraid. That isn't the only surprise here. With none of the usual throwaway skits or cartoon vocals, this shifts the focus to his songwriting. With some X-rated lyrics, he hasn't gone soft - but the biggest shocks here are musical.

CHRIS DIFFORD
Cashmere If You Can (SMMC)
Difford has a novel scheme to market his third solo album. To recreate the thrill of visiting a local record shop at the weekend, he is making one track available as a download every Saturday morning. Fortunately, the songs are up to the standard of the pithy gems he once penned in Squeeze. Like I Did is a touching tale of 'how your kids turn into you'. Full details, saturdaymorningmusicclub.com.

OZZY OSBOURNE
Scream (Columbia)
In inventing British heavy metal with Black Sabbath, Ozzy created a genre in which to grow old disgracefully. This is his best effort in years, with Let Me Hear You Scream and Life Won't Wait a potent mix of oldschool, sludgy guitars and a tighter, contemporary sound. There are Spinal Tap moments, too, with Ozzy asking 'How will I know you, Mr Jesus Christ?' in his Midlands burr. Not for everyone - but he wears it well.

THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS
Further (Parlophone)
Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons have wisely abandoned a tired policy of sprucing up their albums with guest singers. This album sticks to the energetic format of the pair's live shows, skipping between Eighties house music, German electronica and psychedelia. In daring to be different, they have delivered something hypnotic - and often brilliant.

MARCELO ALVAREZ
Tenorissimo! (Sony Classics)
I recently heard Marcelo Alvarez in Aida at Covent Garden and his voice had acquired some beef. This compilation follows him from his more lyrical days and there is no overlap with his splendid Decca recital of Verdi arias. I'm not sure what his tenor rivals will think of the CD's title, but he certainly does some fine singing.

CHRISTINA AGUILERA
Bionic (RCA)
Aguilera delivers on her promise of a more futuristic direction. The upbeat Elastic Love and Not Myself Tonight revel in modern electronics, although her fourth album is brought to life by three ballads cowritten by Aussie songbird Sia Furler. Lady Gaga and Rihanna are now the competition, but Christina is still ahead of the game.

OASIS
Time Flies (Big Brother)
Popular belief has it that Noel Gallagher's finest songs were written on the dole in Manchester, a theory supported by early gems like Roll With It and Live Forever. But this compilation (featuring all 27 Oasis singles, eight of them chart- toppers) is surprisingly even. The band's later albums were patchy, but The Importance Of Being Idle and Lyla remain decent tunes. This should keep fans satisfied until the inevitable reunion tour.
