PR: Toon Books prize winners

One of the big announcements at ALA was the winner of the Toon Books sweepstakes, which was co-sponsored by our mothership, School Library Journal. The grand prize, a visit from Benny and Penny creator Geoffrey Hayes and original artwork, went to Ann Niederkorn from Graham & Parks Alternative Public School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Hayes won the Geisel award for best book for beginning readers for his Benny and Penny in The Big No-No, which puts an extra-sweet spin on the grand prize.

The other 50 winners each received a complete set of Toon books. Over 2,300 teachers and… Read More

The Good Comics for Kids team was at the American Library Association meeting in Washington, DC, last weekend, and on Sunday, June 27, we presented a panel titled “Good Comics for Kids.” I’m happy to say that over 100 people attended the hour-and-a-half session and the vast majority stayed until the last question was answered. We handed out a list of core titles at the presentation, and at the request of several people, we are posting them here as well. We have added ISBNs for some titles for your convenience.

Every week, my colleagues at Robot 6 and I report in on what we are reading. The stack always includes a lot of children’s comics, so check out this week’s edition and see what’s on our nightstands.

Librarian Christian Zabriskie talks about how manga knits together the multicultural teenage clientele at the Queens library:

“This kind of secret, hidden knowledge gives them a power and an empowerment,” he said. “It’s this generation’s esoterica.”

But, he said, unlike other teenage rituals like graffiti or, at the extremes, gang membership, manga fandom increasingly happens at one of the safest places around — the library.
