What is the Mouth of the Beast?

If you have ever listened to live recordings you will probably have noticed that not all recordings have the same quality. It all depends on the gear used, the location of the mics and of course the band's groove. Back behind the soundboard, the taper section was not the ideal location for recording. And those crisp soundboard tapes, they leave out the full experience of the show. The missing sound is the dynamics of being up close to the stage while the band performed. Up front, dead center in the first fifteen rows is where "the sound" was ideal. The tapers knew this was the spot. They braved security and the bands' roadies to make these tapes. This project has been started to preserve, archive and distribute these rare recordings. This project is for the fans — who want to experience recordings made in the "Mouth of the Beast". We will refer to this project as MOTB in the following documentation.

The MOTB is in process of transferring 1800 of these Master Recordings.

Some of the recordings will be upgrades to those circulating, but most of these tapes have never been transferred or even been heard in circulation. Some of the tapers have disappeared but the masters remain. We are concentrating on bands who allow trading and seeding of their live music. We adhere to bands' policies to the letter. MOTB will first concentrate on Grateful Dead recordings. There are many other bands represented in these collections of master recordings, but we have chosen to concentrate on Jerry Garcia related music in our initial months.

The purpose of MOTB is to transfer these original analog masters using only the best audio technology

The MOTB team was selected based on audio expertise, personal gear available for transfers, circulating knowledge and overall recording experience. We know in the next five years, new audio technology will be coming, but time is against us. These old analog tapes are oxidizing. They won't last forever. The tapers are dissappearing as well. The documentation for these recordings needs to be archived. We need to get the audio captured the best way we can using today's digital gear. Therefore we have contacted the premier audio manufacturers to help us with the project. We are glad to announce that Grace Design, Sound Devices, Tascam, Mytek and Benchmark have donated audio equipment for the MOTB project. We have and will continue to document meticulously the entire process of the project -- included all hardware and software used in the MOTB process. Included will be detailed notes and comments from the tapers as well as CD labels and inserts from the MOTB artwork team.

So where are the recordings?

An up-to-date list can always be found on our Official Releases webpage. This list will give you all the details on where to locate the trackers to downloading these shows. No music is hosted here. Please do not email us for a copy of a show. We have chosen to utilize Bittorrent technology for mass distribution of the music. You must download the shows from our approved list of trackers. All our shows will be released on various trackers in two versions. One version will be 24-bit/96khz flac for DVD-A burning and one version 16-bit/44.1khz flac for CD burning. If you need help, the tracker sites have extensive documentation on how to download, extract and burn flac files. You can also find information on Bittorrent as well. Enjoy!

Not For Profit!

We are not for profit. There will be no money made on the distribution, handling, archiving, remastering or editing of these musical gems. Many people are donating their time and energy and gear to this for no monetary gain. This is a labor of love. We do this for the love of the music with our wives calling from the other room — will you just get off that computer already. If you have a recording that you would like to donate to the MOTB project, please feel free to contact us. We will transfer your recording for free and send you back a special artwork printed CD and DVD-A set of your recording, as well as returning your master tape. The project is about sharing!
