Matt Magnuson, Senior Inventory Analyst at WhitePages, has written an article in Ad Monsters about the reasons why advertisers should consider staying away from over-targeting.

“In recent years, the online advertising industry has increasingly leveraged geographic, demographic and behavioral targeting in their quest to attract only the best, most qualified users. In doing so, nationwide, non-targeted campaigns have been pushed to the wayside when in fact, they still perform very well on some of the web’s largest publishers. These campaigns deliver on pace, have a fantastic click through rate (CTR), and most importantly, perform strongly against advertiser performance metrics.”

With the Earth top of mind for most people today, we thought it made sense to illustrate the environmental and economic impact of print white pages production as a reminder that while the opt-in movement is slowly taking place across the nation, there is still so much more progress to be made.

While I have found it surprisingly difficult to try to put into words what it’s like to work at DealPop, I can say for certain that this is the best time I have ever had at any job – and believe me when I tell you that I’ve worked for many different companies.

DealPopper's Drew, Jared and Tomi in the FLY (Fierce, Local, savvY) Squad's quarters.

Although a part of WhitePages, an established company that has grown and demonstrated continued success for over a decade now, DealPop tends to feel more like a start-up than anything else.  Our boss, Cindy, has done an outstanding job of creating an atmosphere that is supportive, energetic and collaborative. We are all empowered to make decisions and do not need to run every minute detail by whomever it is we report to; we are trusted to make the right decision and routinely check-in with one another to ensure that we are moving a project in the right direction.

For me this whole experience has been a beautiful combination of truly enjoying the work that I perform daily as an account manager coupled with a “work hard/play hard” atmosphere. I know that sounds like a cliché, but it really applies here. Sales and renewal goals are rewarded with gift cards on a weekly basis and it’s not uncommon for us to have a Friday happy hour in our cube city or to bounce on down to the 12th floor for air hockey, ping pong or foosball complemented by some fine lagers or pilsners. Or tequila for that matter, but I digress.

All fun and games aside, what has really made working here both worthwhile and enjoyable is the nature of what we do; we put together great offers for our customers while simultaneously driving new business to the merchants who run their offers with us. I moved to Seattle in October and started working at DealPop in January and I have received a crash-course in Seattle commerce and geography. I have learned more about the restaurants, salons and small businesses here in three months than I ever could have trying to explore the city on my own.

Furthermore, I get to oversee the offers for five cities so I get to learn about the businesses and neighborhoods in those cities too. I love to travel and while my aspirations are more international when it comes to vacations, sometimes a nice weekend get-away to somewhere nearby will do the trick just the same. At the end of the month, for example, my wife and I are headed to Portland for the weekend. I haven’t been there in over ten years but because that’s one of the cities I oversee, I know exactly where I want to go and what I want to do. And yes, I bought a couple of vouchers for offers that we’ve run there and I fully intend to use them.

So what’s it like to work at DealPop? Best darn job I ever had!

Since we launched our Run & Hug contest on April 6th, we have had more than 120 amazing stories submitted, each that illustrate how teachers can truly make lasting impressions on our lives. There is still one week left (contest ends on April 22nd) to tell us about your favorite teacher for a chance to win 4 round trips to NYC (2 for you, 2 for your teacher) to say “thanks” in person.

For inspiration, I thought I would share an amazing story from Brandi Turner about her second grade teacher Mrs. Campbell:

On the first day of 2nd grade, my life changed forever. A very special person entered my life…my teacher, Mrs. Campbell. There are many things I remember about 2nd grade but the most important is how a teacher made a positive impact on my life. I remember her caring voice, her making sure we had read aloud every day after recess, her safe classroom feeling, her sucking on cough drops while reading to us, her kind words if you were worried or upset, her helpful ways in encouraging positive friendships, and most importantly, her display of the importance of receiving the most out of education as possible. I remember her taking the time & effort to really get to know each and every student. I knew that year that I wanted to become a teacher. I knew where I wanted my professional life to go. She showed me the importance of education and the most rewarding job of becoming a teacher. Mrs. Campbell left our district while I was in middle school and we lost contact but I never forgot about her or that year.

I did go onto become a teacher. Ironically, my first job offer was in a 2nd grade classroom…meant to be. Even more ironic, I was shopping with my mom the month before I was to begin this new job and I ran into Mrs. Campbell. It completely made my day. I was so proud to tell her about my new job and the direction my life had gone. She cried and smiled and hugged me. I had impacted her life too. We shared email addresses and went on our way. Fast forward 10 years, we are both librarians for elementary schools now. By chance. We don’t get the opportunity to talk or share resources personally very often but when we do, my heart smiles. I am thankful for technology so that I can communicate with a true mentor, friend, and hero.

Because of all Mrs. Campbell did for me, I now have “Make a positive impact on a student” listed on my Bucket List. I can only hope to touch as many lives as she has touched.

Everyone has a story like Brandi’s – so get on it!  And, once it’s approved, don’t forget to spread the word via Twitter, Facebook, email, etc. to gather those votes!
