Warner Home Video have announced the US Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD releases of Alexander Revisited: The Final Cut on 18th September 2007 priced at $28.99 SRP each. Released earlier this year on standard definition DVD, now Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD owners can experience Oliver Stone’s Alexander as he meant it to be seen with this all-new unrated version that features 45-minutes of never-before-seen footage.

The discs feature a new introduction by the director which reflects Stone’s passion and attention to detail in getting this film exactly the way he envisioned. Says Stone, “Over the last two years I have been able to sort out some of the unanswered questions about this highly complicated and passionate monarch -- questions I failed to answer dramatically enough. This film represents my complete and last version, as it will contain all the essential footage we shot. I don’t know how many filmmakers have managed to make three versions of the same film, but I have been fortunate to have the opportunity because of the success of video and DVD sales in the world, and I felt if I didn’t do it now, with the energy and memory I still have for the subject, it would never quite be the same again. For me, this is the complete Alexander, the clearest interpretation I can offer.”

Now restructured into two acts with an intermission, Alexander: Revisited takes a bolder, more in-depth look at Alexander’s (Colin Farrell) life and his relationships with his mother, Olympias (Angelina Jolie), his father Philip (Val Kilmer), his lifelong friend and battle commander Hephaistion (Jared Leto), Roxane, his ambitious and beautiful Bactrian wife (Rosario Dawson), and his trusted general and confidant Ptolemy (Anthony Hopkins). The new film intensifies the beauty and unbelievable brutality of Alexander’s pre-Christian world of social customs and morals so different from todays.

Update: With the press release in hand it now appears that we were wrong, Alexander Revisited on Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD does include extras, and many of them are completely new!

Almost three hours of new bonus content includes an introduction by the director, an all-new documentary from Stone’s son, filmmaker Sean Stone, Fight Against Time: Oliver Stone’s Alexander, with 85 minutes of behind-the-scenes footage, exclusive web-enabled features and more.

The film is split across two-discs on both formats, with the main feature presented in 1080P 2.40:1 Widescreen with English 5.1 Surround audio (Dolby Digital on Blu-ray Disc, Dolby Digital Plus on HD DVD) and optional English, French and Spanish subtitles. Extras are spread across the discs like so…

Disc One

  • Commentary by Producer, Director, and Writer Oliver Stone
  • Commentary by Historian Robin Lane Fox

Disc Two

Single layer BD and no PCM 5.1, just a regular DD 5.1 track, for Blu-ray?!

Dolby Digital plus and no TrueHD on HD-DVD?! :(

And NO EXTRAS regardless of format?!

Are Warner seriously trying to piss off the consumers and giving them the finger?

In terms of extras the DVD release of Revisisted had just the intro by Stone as well. That's not to say they shouldn't have included the extras found on the non-Revisisted DVDs, but I guess they're saving those for when they release the theatrical cut in HD.

I love Oliver Stone but I heard this was terrible. Does anyone know if it is any better than World Trade Centre?

Updated with revised artwork (now with a Two-Disc Special Edition banner) and confirmed AV specs. Just regular 5.1 on this one.

WOW that's some extras compared to the DVD, which I've only just bought.

The Sean Stone documentary is probably the same one used on the Asian Theatrical Cut DVDs, it's a borefest.

I wonder if the commentaries will be entirely new or re-used with extra commentary for the new bits. They did this for the older Extended Cut (aka - Director's Cut), obviously the Robin Lane Fox commentary is new.
