FINAL ENTRIES: Barcelona 2010 set to take off with highest ever athlete participation

Barcelona 2010A record number of 1,368 athletes from 50 countries have entered for the 20th European Athletics Championships to be held in Barcelona between 26 July and 1 August.

The previous record was set during the last edition of the championships in Göteborg, Sweden, in 2006 when 1,288 athletes from 48 Member Federation countries participated.

The final entries list includes 759 athletes in the men’s events and 609 in the women’s events. However information regarding a handful of athletes from Spain are still pending and their participation will be confirmed once the required information is received.

For the first time ever all 50 European Athletics Member Federations will be represented at the championships.

The most striking statistic can be seen in the numbers of participants for the marathon and race walking events, which will be held in downtown Barcelona.

A total of 69 athletes will compete in the men’s marathon race, while 44 athletes will start in the women’s 42.195km race. The three race walking events will feature a line-up of 25 to 30 athletes per discipline.
