Rothbart’ Rants are something that we hold very near and dear to our hearts here at Sarcastic Gamer. Here is the quite short debut of this (love it or hate it) fan favorite.

Rothbart’s Rant #1 – “Micro” Transactions

by Sean “rothbart” Workman

Micro – mi·cro [mahy-kroh] – adjective – extremely small. minute in scope.
Transaction – trans·ac·tion [tran-zak-shuhn] – noun – something that is transacted, especially a business agreement.

A few years ago we were told of an idea that promised to bring a paradigm shift, changing the way we pay for and think about both buying games and add-ons to games we already owned. That concept was called the “microtransaction.” We were told it would allow developers to work on smaller chunks of game assets, it would allow them to release content more frequently, it would allow us to pay less for individual content allowing us to pick and choose what we want, and would generally be a win-win concept. Between that sales pitch and today’s reality, something went very, very wrong.
