Guild Wars 2 video features developers and new gameplay footage

NCsoft
You know all those quotes and images ArenaNet has been teasing us with the past few days? Well, we finally found out what that was all about -- the promised Guild Wars 2 video was finally released.

We've known for a long time that the design goals for Guild Wars 2 were to make something bigger and better than what we've come to expect from an MMO. A truly immersive story in which the world around you isn't made up of blocks of quest text, oblivious NPCs, and enemies who loiter in a field waiting for you to come attack.

In the new video from ArenaNet, we hear more on this plan straight from the developers: Mike O'Brien, Daniel Dociu, Colin Johanson, and Ree Soesbee. Follow along after the jump to hear what they have to say, and check out the beautiful new gameplay footage in the video.

SOE announces launch date and more for Clone Wars Adventures

Sony Online Entertainment's upcoming Clone Wars Adventures has garnered a fair amount of interest among both the younger target audience and older fans as well. As with any upcoming game, the question of a launch date is always at the top of everyone's need-to-know list.

SOE answered that question today, giving us plenty of extra information in the process. Clone Wars Adventures will launch on September 15th, the same day as the premiere of the third season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, making for an exciting day for fans.

Launch is still a little over a month away, but there is already the promise of more to come. We've known for a while that the game will be free-to-play with microtransactions, but SOE has a special retail box planned for release on October 5th. The Clone Wars Adventures Galactic Passport will be sold in stores throughout North America, and will contain a 90-day membership, 500 Station Cash, the ability to unlock the Togruta playable character, a Yoda monitor topper, and more.

This announcement comes with a closer look at minigames, one of the game's main features. Check out the gallery below for new screenshots (including a peek at housing), and a brand new "Inside the Game" video after the jump.

New Pocket Legends update adds new backstory and content

Pocket Legends, the MMO designed for mobile devices, has been enjoying a measure of success and is introducing a new update for fans.

Pocket Legends: Adventures is available now as a free update to the original game and expands things quite a bit. Many traditional PC MMO features are added with the update; you'll find a world map now, a new quest system, new townes, and an instanced player tutorial for those who are new to Pocket Legends.

The creators didn't stop there -- open-ended zones have been added to the game as well, along with more lore and backstory to enrich the game's story.

Follow along after the jump for a look at the trailer.

Flameseeker Chronicles: Paving the way

GW
NCsoft
Progression seems to be the theme of things everywhere I look in the world of Guild Wars lately. Frankly, anyone who says the game is dead is kidding themselves. We've just completed the months-long War in Kryta story arc, but even that isn't completely over. The arc is a part of the larger Guild Wars Beyond campaign, and there is almost certainly more to come.

Even with War in Kryta, the war didn't end with all the various tales wrapped up in a neat package. People are missing, people are dead, entire villages have been deserted, and that's just in Tyria. We know that significant events are coming in Elona and Cantha too, so will Guild Wars Beyond show us precursors to those events soon? We know that we've got some years before Palawa Joko returns, but will there be hints of what's to come? And what about Emperor Kisu's successor and his unification of the Kurzicks and Luxons? The possibilities are many, and ArenaNet has shown us that it has no intention of letting the current game stagnate.

As things go forward in Guild Wars 1, work on and news about Guild Wars 2 seems to be progressing at a breakneck pace as well. The interesting thing about the Guild Wars 2 news is a particular common theme -- follow along after the jump as I take a closer look.

EverQuest announces 17th expansion

House of Thule is coming to EverQuest. The game's 17th expansion is planned for an October 12th release and will bring a generous amount of new content and features to EverQuest.

House of Thule takes place in a dreamland setting: Powerful leaders across Norrath are falling into dream-induced comas, and it's your job to find out what's happening.

The expansion brings a level cap increase to 90, more storage, and new raids, zones, and spells. That's not all, though: House of Thule also introduces player housing, something EverQuest fans have been looking forward to for a while. With just over eight weeks to go until the expansion's release, you've got plenty of time to start saving for your little corner of Norrath. In the meantime, check out the gallery below for a first look at House of Thule.

SWG players receive treehouse anniversary gift

SOE
If you're a Star Wars Galaxies player, you'll find a nice gift waiting for you the next time you log in.

SOE has released the third in a line of recent seven-year-anniversary gifts for SWG players, and it's a schematic for some fun housing: a Wookiee treehouse. It's a single-use item, of course, but it will net you a pretty impressive new residence.

The Wookiee treehouse takes up two lots, gives you 200 storage, and makes quite a statement on the surrounding landscape. If you'd like to check it out more closely, you can find a list of materials and several screenshots on the official SWG forums.

[Updated to clarify that this is an anniversary gift, not a veteran reward!]

ArenaNet announces planned server downtime for Guild Wars

GW
NCsoft
Last year, Massively took a look at the top five features that make Guild Wars a great game. The first thing on the list was a near-total absence of server downtime. In the five-plus years the game has been around, incidents of server downtime are practically nonexistent.

For this reason, Guild Wars players were surprised to see an announcement of planned server downtime: "On Tuesday, August 10th, we will be moving the Guild Wars live database to a new data center. This will require a temporary interruption in service beginning at 12:01AM Pacific time on that date. Service may be suspended for up to 24 hours, although we will do everything we can to expedite the process. Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding during this rare interruption!"

The fact that it's such an unusual occurrence will likely prevent it from being a frustrating one, and players should be back in Tyria in under 24 hours.

[Update: The move has been delayed until Wednesday, August 11th]

Newest DDO screenshots introduce Claw of Vulkoor quest

Turbine
Update 6 for Dungeons and Dragons Online is rapidly approaching, and the newest adventure pack has been garnering some attention on the DDO Lamannia servers.

The Claw of Vulkoor, set in the new wilderness area of the Red Fens, is a quest in which you'll escort Drow warriors to an important artifact while being as silent and sneaky as possible.

The newest screenshots give us a peek at the area of the quest, complete with giants, a jungle to skulk about in, and huge scorpions. Check out the gallery below for a peek at The Claw of Vulkoor, and if you're a VIP player, don't forget that you can copy your character over to the Lamannia server and experience the quest right away.

Betawatch: July 30 - August 6, 2010

Welcome to Betawatch, Massively's weekly report on the state of MMO betas. In each installment, we'll report everything from the latest open betas, closed betas and even alphas in one convenient place. Plus, we'll make sure to include as much info on each game's current status, including projected release dates (if known) and links to the sign-up forms to get yourself into that beta you've been seeking.

Captains of Dark Tide enters open beta this week, so if you've been curious about this elves vs. pirates title, it's finally up for everyone to try. Vindictus will be filling that empty space in the closed beta list, as it's set to enter its first round of closed beta testing in just a few days. While the Vindictus team is currently not accepting signups for this round of closed beta, we'll keep a close eye out for the next one.

In the meantime, follow along after the jump for the latest Betawatch list!

Titan Books introduces RuneScape book series

Guild Wars fans aren't the only ones who will be settling down with a good book about their favorite MMO this year.

A press release from Titan Books introduced a new series of Runescape books, the first of which is scheduled for an October release. The book, titled Betrayal at Falador, will serve as a "prequel that reveals the back story of the RuneScape world."

There's no word at the moment on how many novels the series will contain, but with so many years of RuneScape to work with, the authors won't be lacking for material. If you'd like a detailed description of Betrayal at Falador, check out the book's page on the Titan site, and look for the book itself this fall!
