Synopsis
Synopsis

From the dark mind of STEVE NILES (30 Days of Night) comes a story set in the aftermath of our world's collapse.

Records show the Earth once known was consumed by religious wars, spurred by the suppression of free thought and where creative expression is now viewed as the rot and infestation of the mind. This chilling vision of the future unveils a world where the police now patrol for crimes of the imagination, or Mind Crimes as they’re called. Those beliefs, along with any tales of false heroes, idols or gods, are illegal.

Special detective Philip Khrome doesn't enforce Imagination, instead he works in homicide; that’s where the action is, and he’s seen it all before. But criminals evolve and the world is forever changing. When a killing spree hits his department, Khrome finds himself face-to-face with a perpetrator who has merged reality with superstition, and nothing is what it seems.

This enemy of folklore will require old fashioned detective techniques to bring to justice - the only problem? It will take imagination to find the source of this new evil.

ICR reviews the complete City of Dust: A Philip Khrome Story series
Thanks to Alex Haas for his below review on the entire series from Steve Niles. Keep an eye out for the paperback collection that will be on sale in the next few weeks.

"The greatest appeal here is the combination of idealism, both in the concepts behind the story and in its characters, alongside a gritty realism. The theme here ends up being one of triumph over the constraints of the "realistic," even if nobody in this story achieves truly superhuman stature as in the folk tales. You have books and comics aplenty that present Draconian futures with authority so complete that noone can escape it - presented as warnings to readers in the present to not allow the situation to ever progress to such a point. Then you have City of Dust, which presents an ugly future in which people can still grow and rise above the prison of their own times. That's pretty inspirational as far as I'm concerned."
Overall: 4 stars.

Mania praises the City of Dust: A Philip Khrome Story miniseries

In their Comics You May Have Missed article, Kurt Amacker remarks at the level of depth in City of Dust: A Philip Khrome Story. Below is just a portion from Kurt's article.

"What emerges invokes Niles’s greatest strengths as a writer and presents a thoughtful and original twist on some of the genre tropes he clearly loves. Yes, the classic monsters we all know have an important role to play in this narrative. But, they emerge in a manner consistent with the story’s setting and complementary of its intentions. This represents another great effort by Radical Publishing, who won Diamond’s Gem Award for Best New Publisher last year. Though Radical already has a few of their properties in development in Hollywood, it hasn’t lost sight of comics."

Comics Waiting Room reviews City of Dust: A Philip Khrome Story #4

"Niles continues to spin a darkly amusing tale and does an excellent job of fleshing out the character’s history while setting the stage for an explosive upcoming climax. Zid continues to put his talents to good use, creating beautiful spreads and aerial views of this technologically advanced world. The two page spread of the council conference room, filled will several glowing screens floating and/or mounted around the area, creates a futuristic and multi-dimensional feel to the book."

Comics Bulletin reviews City of Dust: A Philip Khrome Story #4

After the last page cliffhanger that this issue leaves you with, I’m onboard for next month. How Niles will tie this story together and what effects it will have on the sterile world Khrome lives in, is enough to entice anyone to keep going that has read this far.

Twelve Fingers reviews issue #4 of City of Dust: A Philip Khrome Story

"CITY OF DUST: A PHILIP KHROME STORY #4 packs in Werewolves, Vampires, and Frankenstein then combines all of this beautiful fantasy into one tight, set in the future, SiFi drama. Do I dig this book? Yes I do! Steve Niles and Brandon Chng have consistently raised the bar in this series and issue number four is no exception."

Playback STL magazine reviews issue #2 of City of Dust: A Philip Khrome Story

"This is the second of five planned issues of City of Dust, so it will be interesting to see where the author take the story in the three remaining issues. The first two have created a recognizable future world (albeit with a strong horror element which is the cause of those maimed bodies) and raise some interesting philosophical issues, and have also left sufficient ambiguity that the story could be developed in several different directions."

Bloody-Disgusting.com reviews issues #1-4 of City of Dust: A Philip Khrome Story

"Niles has crafted an excellent story here. The story reads like a cyberpunk noir with bits of horror, action and gore mixed in. There is great character development and Niles does a good job of establishing the universe this story takes place in. Reading this story one has to wonder how a society with no imagination will combat creatures that were birthed from imagination?"

Extra Sequential reviews issue #4 of City of Dust: A Philip Khrome Story

"With its horror meets sci-fi concept, plus some great thought provoking themes this series could easily have become a mish-mash of ideas, achieving none well. Niles rises above that. With a deft hand, he is able to take just the right amount of ingredients from each genre to form an eclectic, yet electric adventure story. With Khrome finally awakening to the breaking chaos around him, and others like Ajax, discovering that perhaps they’re not as smart as they thought, you just know a mad battle is on the way, with the fate of the city at stake. I can’t wait. "

Comics And... Places City of Dust: A Philip Khrome Story #3 as one their best

"This is the best series by Radical Comics so far and will be the first one that I will want to pick up in a collected edition. Steve Niles continues to change things up and just when I thought it was one story it is even more complex. This issue we find out Khrome’s boss is a robot, whose job it is to watch out for him. Why is Khrome so important and what the heck is going on is still to be revealed."

Major Spoilers covers #2 of City of Dust: A Philip Khrome Story

"I think everyone owes it to themselves to set aside the mainstream offerings from the big two and explore those issues and titles coming from the smaller publishers. Radical Comics has delivered a fascinating story in the pages of City of Dust. Niles writing builds the reader up to each major revelations in a way that engages instead of disappoints. City of Dust #2 is an excellent second installment of the five issue mini-series. If you like futuristic noir horror, City of Dust is an excellent read."

Comics Waiting Room reviews issue #2 of City of Dust: A Philip Khrome Story

"The art in this book continues to drop jaws. Zid has a real talent of conveying shock, horror, exasperation and suspicion in the faces of the character, and the darker creatures of the night do not disappoint in the slightest. The reader isn’t spared any details (especially in the final panels) of how some of these people meet their ends. One brutal death reminded me strongly of Oddjob from the Bond film “Goldfinger,” thus bringing a smile and a grimace to my face at the same time. And only one word is needed to describe the variant wraparound cover: Damn. "

Blog Critics Magazine reviews City of Dust: A Philip Khrome Story #1

"This being a Steve (30 Days of Night) Niles series, City of Dust proves to be a pulpishly grisly affair. The abovementioned snobbish couple quickly get rend into separate limbs for their tour of the lower cityscape, while the holder of that children's book is discovered sans his head. It's all somehow connected to a shadowy figure we see talking to the "father of modern society" Henry Ajax, and though we don't yet know what this figure looks like, we're fairly certain Here There Be Monsters."

856d.com gives a spotlight review of City of Dust: A Philip Khrome Story

First and foremost let me just say this book is great. It drips with coolness. This book combines a future setting, film noir, a Frankenstein story line, a fascist government and Fahrenheit 451, stirs gently and produces a book that you should buy, take home and read and enjoy a great story.

Overall Grade A

On top of an amazing story, beautiful character designs, dialogue, and plenty of twists to keep you watching for the rest of this series. There is also gorgeous, dark artwork that just makes this amazing story an amazing comic. What else can I say about this…..get it, read it!"http://www.projectfanboy.com/vb/showthread.php?p=4539
