No More Apologies -- It's Time to Stand Up for Our Convictions

What's Your Reaction:

For some time now, various "reporters" and on-air personalities on the Fox News Network have failed to report the full story or relevant facts, instead indulging in race baiting in order to exploit people's fears and crank up the fringe of their audience. This was exemplified by Glenn Beck's nightly assault on Van Jones earlier this year. Recently, Fox has cranked up stories about the Department of Justice's decision not to prosecute a voter intimidation case against a Black Panther group and even worse, calls for Atty. General Holder's resignation. And now, the Sherrod Debacle.

Turns out Van Jones' name was added to a website without his permission, a fact the group finally admitted some time after he resigned. And maybe he said some things about the Republican Party that he shouldn't have -- but that has nothing to do with the fact that he is a brilliant environmental organizer. It also turns out that it was the Bush Administration who decided not to prosecute the case against the black panthers because as Bush's Assistant Attorney General Perez testified, "the facts did not constitute a prosecutable violation of the criminal statues, and under the Obama Administration Justice Department a judgment was won in a civil case.

And by now we all know how the Sherrod story went down. Despite his claims to the contrary on Fox News Sunday, Chris Wallace didn't have his facts quite right. As a media matters study showed, Fox News did in fact spend a lot of air-time on July 19th and 20th cranking up the false story. Not to mention that foxnews.com bragged that shortly after they posted a "report" about the video Mrs. Sherrod resigned.

None of this is new. I don't believe all or even most of the Republican party voters are racist, but going at least as far back as Lee Atwater, the Willie Horton ads, and the attacks on John McCain in the South Carolina primaries in both 2000 and 2008, the immigration debate in 2006, there is a persistent willingness in the Republican party to use race baiting for electoral advantage. The fact is, this is racist behavior.

Now if the Tea Party, which is not a professional group of politicians have the decency to repudiate the racist fringe in their group, why can't the Republicans? Obviously they think this approach works on the margins, but even if this stuff works, it sure doesn't produce good leaders or a civil society, and it certainly doesn't produce a stronger America, it produces an even more polarized and angry America. It's that willingness to put party ahead of country that has the Republicans in such low regard.

There are lessons to be learned here. Tom Vilsack stated the first one best: don't make decisions without all the facts. To that I would add: consider the source. If it is a group of individuals or a corporation that has chronically ignored the facts and engaged in race baiting in the past, they are likely to do it again. A report by Fox News, Breitbart or Matt Drudge, ought to have -- as it does in most people's minds -- little credibility.

The second lesson is harder. Stand up for what you believe in. I admire Nancy Pelosi because she is tough, gets things done, and doesn't take crap from the right wing or any one else. After the year and a half this country has just been through, it is pretty obvious that the right-wing has no intention of cooperating with anyone, and that they will do anything to regain power, just as they were willing to do anything to hold on to it. The only reasonable approach is to stand up to them as you would any group of bullies. Call them out for what they do- or don't do as the case may be. If the Tea Party can call out some of their own members, surely we can call out a group of people who have put their party ahead of their country.

I have often said the biggest problem with the Democrats is that we are not tough enough. Now is the time to be tough. The fact is that the stimulus package has reduced unemployment from where it would have otherwise been in this Bush-induced recession (based on policies most of the Republicans now in Congress voted for). The fact is, as 60 members of the House and the CBO showed last week, the Public Option, or Medicare Buy-in, as it should more correctly be called, would have reduced the deficit over ten years by an additional $68 million dollars. The fact is that President Obama -- despite Republicans killing the climate change bill -- has done more in 18 months to change America's approach to the environment and green jobs than any president in memory.

The fact is that if we are going to tackle the deficit, it makes no sense to cut taxes for people with plenty of money while we tell people who depend on Social Security and Medicare that they have to do with less, or to play games with unemployment insurance for those who need it most.

The fact is that the Democrats won the election in 2008. The Republicans refuse to do anything for the country except say "no". That means we have to work hard and do what we believe is right. And we have to stop apologizing for it. We have to stand up for what we believe in and stop trying to make deals with people who cannot be trusted to make deals for the good of our country. It's not too late to win in 2010. Conviction politics works. Just ask the right wing!

Hurray for Howard Dean. I have felt for years the Democrates have let the conservative right get away with political murder. Howard Dean calles them out, and you get some arrogant FOX reporter trying to blame Mr. Deans attitude with the weather in New Hampshire. Thay have for years lied to, the american people for their own political gains. And the news media along with the Democrates have been sitting back and letting them get away with it. I for one ould like to here more from Howard Dean

Dean has not addressed the real concern... I refuse to use the colloquialism about the "elephant in the room" because this time we're talking about a sad little donkey...
This crop of Democrats has completely ignored their liberal base... Most of them have no interest in creating jobs or (more importantly) putting a cap on all the outrageous outsourcing.
I can't count the "liberal" Democrats on one hand... and guess what - their seats are safe this year!

WHY IS YOUR POSITION NEWS MR.EX-CHAIRMAN? You've been saying this for YEARS.Keep pounding the message and MAYBE, JUST MAYBE, the spineless ones may come out of their hidey- holes and be the PROUD LIBERALS that they SHOULD BE.

“Now if the Tea Party, which is not a professional group of politicians have the decency to repudiate the racist fringe in their group, why can't the Republicans?”

That’s the deal, the Tea Party takes the hits and the GOP takes the grits. Tea Party is a front group, that’s what they were made for.
bbtruth   1 hour ago (3:51 PM)
As usual, the typical liberal mantra of something for nothing. Apparently need is the only requisite to acquiring that which does not belong to you. One simply has to want or need something to deserve it, even if one must steal that from some one else.
As for pelosi, she has got to be the dumbest thing on two legs. I wonder what that makes all those who listen to and believe and regurgitate what she says?
Neither party can stand by their supposed convictions because their respective beliefs are irrational and contradictory. Failure to stand firm on their convictions makes them stupid and weak at best or liars, thieves, and murderers at worst. Let's remember that good intentions don't count for spit.

The Des. are not going to extend the tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans. Already this afternoon a Republican announced that everyone would pay extra taxes. This is a lie just as it was in 1993. Back then Republicans did the same thing and too many gullible voters accepted, without proof, that it was true.

The Dems. must fight the lies aggressively or some voters will put the economy in danger again. It begins with them - not The Republicans.
bbtruth   58 minutes ago (4:15 PM)
Wrong! If the Bush tax cut expire, every tax bracket goes up. Taxes on capital gains and dividends are going up Jan. 2011. Estate taxes going from 0 to 55%.
Who are you or anyone to decide what someone else's fair share is? Fair share? By what standard? So they do all the work and have all the brains while you sit back and benefit from their productivity?
43% of the U.S. eligible population pays no taxes or makes income from taxes. That is stealing.
Timba1336   2 minutes ago (5:12 PM)
Wrong, you seem to be in denial that the plan is to keep pretty much everything the same except for those making more than $250,000.00. But hey your a good little soldier so don't let the facts get in the way. Please explain how the estate tax is taking away from someone who worked for it. The person who did the work is dead, the recepients of his or her largesse did not work for it.

Nothing else needs to be said, if Steel ever wonders how to run a national party Howard Dean is an excellent example. Well said Mr Chairman, my thoughts exactly.

MR DEAN DEMOCRATS NEED TO SHOW WHAT WE WE ARE MADE OF ...DO THE RIGHT THING. THE REPUBLICANS HAVE NO IDEAS. THEY REPRESENT THE BIG CORP, BIG INSURANCE AND TO HELL WITH THE SMALLER GUY. OBAMA CHOOSES TO BE FAIR IN ALL HIS DECISIONS BUT WHAT HE DOESN'T COUNT ON IS THE OTHER SIDELYING AND NOT DISCLOSING THE TRUTH.
lsucwells   2 hours ago (3:42 PM)
It's Dr. Dean.
bbtruth   50 minutes ago (4:24 PM)
When you say "to hell with the smaller guy", what you really mean is those who wish to have something for nothing. Health insurance companies benefit more than anyone involved in the obamacare deal. Do a little research and see how much money dems are raking in from corporate interests and how many deals they've cut in favor of their lobbyists. Republicans are just about as bad. They have not truly represented the republican ideals for quite some time.
As for obama, I don't know if I have ever seen a more obviously false human being in my life.
ohboy   7 minutes ago (5:06 PM)
I didn't realize that President Goldman Sachs represented the "smaller guy." Maybe that's why his healthcare "reform" excluded a public option.

Isn't it Howard Dean's fault that the WOMAN who won the popular vote in the primary elections is now only the Secretary of State? Not that I'm complaining... she's the only shining star in the Obama Administration...

Not so much as it is the faults of the Michigan and Florida state parties for pushing their primaries up thereby making their delegates useless. Dean warned them this would happen and they went ahead with it anyway. Don't blame Dean for Hillary's loss.

Heeeeeeeyyaaahhhhh! Go Dean go!! Democrats have got to start governing like they actually won the last election. The "Republicant's" aren't running the show. The BP fiasco should be massive ammunition for the democrats to "refudiate" the rampant corporatization of America and their disregard for the average worker and the environment, which belongs to every American, and the laissez-faire attitude to any kind of regulatory oversight the GOP are always championing.
bbtruth   1 hour ago (4:03 PM)
You're real close on your remark, and yet, so far off. In real laissez-faire capitalism, the government's only job is to keep things like that from happening and punish justly when businesses do violate individual rights. We have not seen real free market capitalism in our lifetimes, nor have we seen the government properly doing it's job. Rampant corporatization? Is that why 80% of jobs are created by small business. All government attempts to "punish" or regulate corporations really only hurt small businesses. Large corporations can take the hits and deal with regulation(hell, they probably have a hand in creating it), this is called crony capitalism.

I would even argue that government regulations and interference are the root cause of most economic and social turmoil.

Meh... Dean lost me at "Pelosi doesn't take any crap from the right-wingers..."
Are you kidding me, Dean? She pretty much served up the Health Insurance Lobby with a big heap of everything and threw in the kitchen sink as well... And she still didn't get even one measly vote from a single Republican... She just plain sucks at her job... It has nothing to do with how hard all of us true liberals argued for a public option or Universal Healthcare... The nanny threw the baby out with the bathwater! Then she had the nerve to go crying in front of a statue of Harvey Milk after she tossed Tammy Baldwin's Amendment for Gay Equal Access under the bus... And don't even get me started on all the "Blue Dogs" that have knocked Obama's legs out from under him...

If Fox News being "mean" is what you think this article is about, I can see why you obviously love Fox "News." Thanks for giving us an easy example.

It's destructive propaganda that is promoting hate & division in the country. They're telling a large block of voters how to vote & it's working.
pmsnbcrules   9 minutes ago (5:05 PM)
And to think they let CBS, NBC, CNN, ABC speak their drivel for years with no problem....and currently PMSNBC does the same...... Hey it's OK.....we're on your side.....

Sounds like some are running scared of the truth......
