Politics / The Christian Science Monitor The latest addition to the VOX Blog. Are we (the media) giving too much weight to Facebook for coverage? Or, with the 500+ million people on the social network - is it imperative for media outlets to keep a watchful eye on what people are saying on it? At the Monitor, we love that are fans are talking with each other about the issues that face this nation.

With ‘American Voices,’ Katie Couric is reminiscent of Charles Kuralt crisscrossing the nation decades ago. But the series also shows how far broadcast media have fallen behind social media.

The Hatch Act prohibits almost all federal employees in the executive branch from being political candidates. Here's how the law came to pass in 1939.

    • Carol King Cummings As a former fed, I knew! As I remember, in the 90s the Hatch Act was amended to allow federal employees to serve at polling places. This was considered a great advancement for those who longed to be politcally active.

Politics / The Christian Science Monitor Monitor staff writer Peter Grier looks into a potential 'banana peel' for Jerry Brown in California.

Recent polls had shown Jerry Brown opening a slight lead over Meg Whitman. Putting him on the defensive could give her a boost.

    • Robyn Bartlett Apparently, Jerry Brown was going along with the conversation...though he's not the one that initiated it.

    • Robert Cardinelle When female liberals coyly dismiss aberrant behavior by politicians of their affiliation as petty and insignificant, they lose all credibility when making claims against it being directed at them or other liberals. They cannot claim victimhood after discharging filthy slurs directed at others. Moreover, after that, no one takes them seriously any longer. They pay for their hypocrisy. A person’s political persuasion should be irrelevant.

The White House holds its second nontelevised press briefing in as many days, and reporters note a less confrontational tone.

Politics / The Christian Science Monitor A plea from ex-lawmakers for Congress to change its rhetoric and tone.

Republicans and Democrats who are former members of Congress write to candidates for the House and Senate and urge them to abandon the "mean-spirited" debate so common today. America's problems are too big to be solved through division.

Politics / The Christian Science Monitor Should the Justice Department get involved?

Liberal groups charge the US Chamber of Commerce with spending foreign donations on political ads targeted against Democrats. Chamber officials deny the charge, but campaign finance law makes it hard to know for sure.

Politics / The Christian Science Monitor An op-ed that draws comparisons between President Obama and ancient Roman emperors like Augustus (This is the opinion of the writer, not the CSM).

President Barack Obama's campaign of images, emotions, and themes won him tremendous popularity – and the presidency. Now, his poll numbers are dragging, his followers disillusioned. To understand the 'ruler cult' cycle, we must look to ancient Roman emperors like Augustus.

Politics / The Christian Science Monitor Other than Meg Whitman of California, are there other gubernatorial candidates out there talking about massive cuts to state government?

New York Republican gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino says he expects to remove $14 billion from the state budget over the next two years if elected. Observers say such ambitious plans are hard to deliver.

      • Robert Cardinelle The Senate has just recently proposed legislation that will force (take) your 401K investment funds to be placed into the failing social security system to shore it up. This is a proposed liberal progressive anti-neoliberal strategy to revive the economy by instituting a massive public investment and financial support program supported by expansionary monetary policy. Oh yeah, Liberals are licking their chops to get at 401 K funds.

Okay...so they mishandled and wasted the money we already gave them and now they expect us to trust them with even MORE of our resources?! (No, I guess they don't since they're not ASKING us but propose to forcibly take it from us knowing t...hat we will not willingly throw good money after bad.) In any other world (where government had not grown completely out of control and become arrogantly and massively unaccountable) the above scenario would make no sense at all! With the cloud of moral idiocy hanging over Washington DC right now, I guess we can expect no better than that they would entertain (even for a moment) such legislation...come on, November 2nd!!!!!See More

Politics / The Christian Science Monitor A look at businessmen who are running for office, hoping to effect change in Washington.

Many of the GOP's 'Young Guns' running for House seats see small businesses as America's economic savior – and want government to get out of their way.

I guess the CSM shut down the comments function on the Glenn Beck story by Ms. Kohn. I tried to post, but was unable. I think she is seriously misguided, many of the conclusions she draws are leaping, or circular at best. I checked out her ...website, (can't even remember the name of it), but after reading the chief propaganda officer's (Ms. Kohn's) statements and viewing the artwork, all I can say is: the Russian Museum called and they want all the early writings of Lenin, & Trotsky back in their collection immediately.See More

      • Chip O'Connor Lee, I was disappointed that W. did not place his library in Waco or Baylor, since it was much closer to Crawford and the site of some conferences. I guess SMU was a good alternative, but it is also in a more congested area. I suppose weighing Dallas versus Waco, he wanted to go with an area where people could do more worthwhile shopping. :) HW didn't consider such things much when he went with the Bryan/College Station area, with little of the specialty boutiques and haute couture of Dallas or Houston.

Along with the usual Tea Party politics we've seen in the new TP candidates - kill social security, extend tax cuts, etc.- Joe Miller has a very extreme religious right agenda. He is a follower of Christian Dominionism, in this case that ...of a extremist named Rushdooney. This religion not only won't separate church from state, the Dominionists want to take Christianity back to the time when sins were punished under Mosaic Law. This is similar to that of Sarah and Todd Palin, as a matter of fact, Mr. Miller and Todd Palin are hunting and fishing buddies. Here's a recent article about the religion and Mr. Miller's connection to it.

      • Carol King Cummings pps speaking of education, I think the Obama administration's Soar to the Top program that pits teachers against each other is terribly misguided. Teaching is a field that really requires teamwork and cooporation. Bush's No Child Left Behind was also misguided and resulted in teaching to the test. Again: education is better handled locally.

      • Gordon Pitts I don't want to label you as naive, Robert. I'm quite convinced that you know full well that massive funding of political campaigns & candidates by special interest groups (Left or Right) has a profound impact on democracy. The fact that the donors can remain anonymous and possibly even foreign is NOT in the best interests of our country. The conflation of "free speech" with "corporate funding" is an unholy union.
